El Segundo Unified School District fundraiser 2012

Please help Study Hut support the El Segundo Unified School District by checking out the following race/fundraiser. This year, quite a few of us are participating. Thanks in advance for your support!

20th Annual “PTA Run For Education 5k”

Please join us March 31, 2012 for this year’s exciting race. Bring your friends! Form a team! Show your community spirit!

Location: El Segundo High School, 640 Main St., just south of Oak Avenue on the east side of Main Street, leaving the southbound lanes open to vehicles.
5K Run/Walk (8:00 AM) Kids’ Fun Run approximately (9:15 AM)

WHY: The event is the PTA’s major fundraiser each year, providing extra funding for El Segundo’s public schools. The Run also serves as a centerpiece for the School District’s new Wellness policy while providing an excellent opportunity to promote multi-generational health and fitness throughout our community.

HOW CAN YOU HELP? HERE ARE 3 WAYS:

#1 Participate! Parents and kids can run, walk, or jog this hilly course through the streets of El Segundo. All registered runners for either race will receive race T-shirts and Fun Run participants will receive a toy generously donated by Mattel. 5th grade and under 5K finishers will receive a medal. There will also be trophies for the 5K male and female overall winners as well as 1st, 2nd and 3rd place medals for 16 age and gender categories.

#2 Volunteer! We need adults (over 18 years old) to monitor every intersection along the race route to ensure the safety of our race participants and assist drivers with alternate routes from 7:30am to 9:30am. Please support our community by agreeing to stand at your street corner (if you live on or near the race route) during the race. You can cheer on the runners and socialize with your neighbors while providing this important service. We need over 100 adult volunteers to make this commitment or we cannot operate the race.

#3 Sponsor! This year our goal is to raise $30,000 for special projects and resource equipment tools for all schools in El Segundo. Your donations continue to help El Segundo Schools maintain their top state ranking for test scores and Distinguished School status. There are many levels of benefits for your tax deductible donations, so you can promote your business while supporting this important community event. Please see the Sponsor levels on the Run for Education Sponsor Opportunity page.

Meeting Long Term goals

The best way to meet a long term goal, whether it be school related or not, is to set bench marks and short term goals along the way. It was Arnold Schwarzenegger who said, “Set an impossible goal and achieve it.” He’s pretty much owned that quote through showing the world that an immigrant body builder can become the world’s most famous movie star and be elected Governor of California.

At Study Hut Tutoring in Manhattan Beach, students from all the schools in the area (Mira Costa High School, Loyola High School, Redondo Union High School, Chadwick High School, Vista Mar High School, Manhattan Beach Middle School, Grandview Elementary School, Pacific Elementary School, Pennykamp Elementary School, Meadows Elementary School, and Robinson Elementary School) set goals using their daily planner. The first step is to make an appropriate and attainable short term goal that fits within your larger goal. If one desires to “earn a 4.0 GPA,” then setting a monthly goal of missing zero assignments is a great first step. At that point it comes down to writing everything down, and crossing everything off, each and every day, every time a task is completed. When there are tasks left wide open, and laziness was not a factor, then some closer time allocation and planning is required.

Study Hut Tutoring students dig in with their daily planners each and every hour they are here. It’s a major component in staying in the game and achieving goals.

Elementary school tutors show students some simple first steps in the planning process, laying the groundwork for future success. Students from Mira Costa High School are rewarded with positive grades and feedback when goals are set, and intermediate goals are completed each and every week.

It’s wonderful to see students dominate using the planner.

College applications made easy

As junior year approaches, the time for applying to college quickly nears. The application process can be stressful if one is not adequately prepared and informed. This summer, Studyhut is offering a new college application counseling program to help guide students and parents alike through the process of applying. When I applied to college I remember the process being somewhat overwhelming and pretty confusing at times. I didn’t have the luxury of having an older sibling who had recently gone through the process to coach me through my applications or personal and supplementary statements. I unfortunately was left in the tough situation of having to figure it out on my own. Looking back, I would have immensely appreciated quality guidance from an experienced graduate on how to best approach my applications and personal statement. This is exactly what the Study Hut’s summer college app program intends to provide. Let the tutors at the Study Hut help coach your student through the applying process so they can focus their attention on the actual application and writing a quality personal statement rather than the rigmarole of the application process itself. The program will utilize some of the keys to surviving the college application process that the tutors here at Studyhut have learned from going through it themselves. Some of the focuses of the program are to aid students in staying on track with their application so that everything may be submitted on time since application deadlines are unwaveringly rigid. Another important component of college applications that strangely enough is often overlooked is the process of extensively researching the schools in which students may be interested in applying too. There is a tremendous amount of information available concerning what schools may be better for certain students depending on what paths they are intending to pursue. By thoroughly researching schools, students can make informed decisions about the programs the institutions have to offer as well as what student life may be like. All in all, I look forward to participating in Study Hut’s summer college app program and helping students get the best edge possible on their applications.
