Second Annual Festival of Learning

February 24th, 2016

Second Annual Festival of Learning

Study Hut Tutoring is proud to endorse and support the Newport-Mesa Unified School District’s Second Annual Festival of Learning.  It is right around the corner: Thursday, February 22, 2016 at 5:00 p.m. at Estancia High School.  The Festival will provide Newport-Mesa families and community members with an opportunity to learn more about many of the incredible specialty programs provided by the district.  Among other programs to be highlighted, the Signature Academies and bi-literacy programs are sure to stand out as those that draw featured interest.  The Signature Academies include programs centered on key industry leading careers and areas of study, including Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM).  Study Hut Tutoring encourages and supports these programs and their goals, specifically by working with our current students on projects, assignments, and ideas related to these classes and areas of study.

Flier for Festival

Various Signature Academy programs will take receive spotlight focus during presentations from principals, teachers, and students from Newport Harbor High School, Ensign Middle School, Corona del Mar High School, and Estancia High School, among others.  Programs to be featured include engineering, medical, performing arts, multimedia, construction technology, the Mandarin and Spanish immersion programs, and more, according to the flier.  There will also be hands-on art and technology demonstrations, musical performances, and food for purchase from the Newport Harbor High School Culinary Team.  Study Hut and our team of tutors are particularly excited for this event since it draws in many of the district’s top students.  It is always refreshing to work with and discuss ideas with the area’s best and brightest.  Our math tutors find it extremely refreshing to work with go-getters who are looking to push the limits of their understanding, rather than just trying to get by.  At Study Hut Tutoring, we push our pupils to pursue concepts and content areas that interest them most, as we all know the motivating power than true interest and passion can provide.  Whether it is through the lens of math tutoring, English tutoring, Spanish tutoring, or other subject tutoring in Newport Beach and the surrounding areas, our tutors love students who are as fired up as we are about these topics.

Please check out the following district link for more information.  We look forward to seeing you there!

Newport Beach Study Hut

February 3rd, 2015

We had a huge day at the Newport Beach Study Hut today, and our top students are all quite eager to hit the ground running with a fresh start second semester.

Mortimer, a diligent and eager-to-learn student, worked on his reading comprehension skills with Rob. They worked on pre-writing essays and the different components that make up an essay. He understands topic sentences, conclusions, and can already write an entire introductory paragraph. This student is already impressively working on various writing prompts for the SAT at the young age of 10!

Another sophomore from Corona Del Mar High School, Mukil, fresh out of a successful finals week, worked on common core math today with the guidance of his tutor. He picked up the brand new concepts taught in class with ease. The new concepts were then drilled by practice problems to reinforce and check understanding. Not only did he get to master previous lessons, but we also helped him prepare and get ahead for his next class. He also worked on Spanish and went over some vocabulary and phrases for his Spanish quiz on Friday.
Lastly, a senior from Mater Dei came in for precalculus tutoring. Although she’s received multiple early college acceptances, she’s not letting senioritis get to her. When she first came in, the packet that her teacher gave as homework made no sense to her. There were lots of blanks and question marks scattered all throughout the packet. However, after just an hour of working through the packet with her math tutor, she ended up fully grasping the points that she didn’t understand an hour ago. Not only did she finally understand it all, but she then demonstrated her understanding by completing difficult practice problems to further enhance and reinforce her learning.

What’s going on in our Newport Beach Office

February 27th, 2014
Here is a blog written by our Manager in the Newport Beach Office named Justine!
Here’s a little blog writeup for what’s going on in Newport:
This week at Study Hut in Newport Beach, many of our students from Newport Harbor High School, Corona del Mar High School, and Sage Hill High School dominated their Final Exams. Erica, who first came to our office with a C in AP Physics, was able to raise her grade to a B+. Go Erica!
Now that Finals are over, don’t relax for too long; SATs are just around the corner.
This Saturday, ten of our students will be riding the SAT wave on March 8th. A shout out goes to our star student Zach, who raised his SAT score by 400 points after February’s test. Fun fact: SAT originally stood for “Scholastic Achievement Test.” Though some students have affectionately nicknamed it the “Stupid A*@ Test,” in 1994, the test was re-named to simply “SAT.”
If the SAT isn’t your cup of tea, please consider the ACT.  Almost every college accepts both tests, and many students prefer one over the other. Several more students are gearing up to take the ACT on April 12th. If you haven’t registered for a test date yet, it’s not too late. Don’t fret if you haven’t prepared, just come in for our free diagnostic test on March 8th to find out where you stand.
May the odds be ever in your favor.

STUDY HUT FOUNDATION CPK FUNDRAISER

If you bring in a flier, 20% of each receipt goes to the Study Hut Foundation!

Nestled on a quiet corner in Lomita, directly across the street from the Lomita Public Library, the Study Hut Foundation is perfectly located to conveniently serve the students of Nathaniel Narbonne High School. The Foundation offers the same tutoring and college prep services that the Study Hut offers at its for-profit locations, but it offers them free of charge to the students who qualify to receive a tutoring scholarship.  The Study Hut Foundation offers a bright and comfortable spot for students to complete homework, study for exams, and prepare for college. Our young, experienced tutors offer personalized tutoring on all subjects in the elementary through high school curriculum.  They are smart, fun, and dedicated to helping students reach their academic potential.

Hours:
Monday – Friday
3PM – 8PM

The Study Hut Foundation aims to provide the same tutoring and test-prep services, which our students in Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, Newport Beach, and El Segundo have become accustomed to, free of cost to students who could otherwise not afford them.

Afford hard working, motivated students the opportunity to reach their highest academic potential and achieve their goal of attending college.

Improve our community by supporting the good work of committed students.

How Funding Will Be Used:
The goal of the Study Hut Foundation is to support the education of students, in Lomita and neighboring communities, who could not otherwise afford to receive tutoring. As such, the primary function of the funding that the Study Hut Foundation receives will be used to fund scholarships for students who meet Study Hut Foundation qualifications. The scholarships offset the costs of tutoring, including the tutor’s time and the materials used during the session.

Our Redondo Beach Office Manager Justin went to our Study Hut Foundation on Monday May 6th, and he tutored two students, Gabrielle and Joe. Gabrielle used to get all A’s and now she is getting F’s in Chemistry and Geometry. She forgot her Geometry book so they worked on Chemistry.

Justin then worked with Joe. He is getting D’s in both Algebra 2 and Chemistry. Joe has a hard time balancing between sports and classes but is very capable of getting good grades. He just needs someone to sit down with him and help him with his work.

We have a physics teacher from Mira Costa who is volunteering to work there!

We will be holding our Study Hut Parent/Teacher Scholar Quiz on Sunday June 2nd from 4-9pm at the Manhattan Beach Country Club to help raise funds for the Foundation.

Why Hut 1 is Better than Hut 2

August 20th, 2012

Study Hut, coming up on it’s sixth birthday in December has come a long way. Not only have we expanded in the South Bay, but we are now in Newport Beach! By nature, you can only imagine the tutor rivalry that has spurred out from such expansion. The biggest rivalries are between the Manhattan Beach Study Hut, which we tutors like to call “Hut 1 or The Mother Hut”, and the Redondo Beach Study Hut located in the Redondo Beach Riviera Village, which we call, “Hut 2” (take note that no other cool name has been associated with this location). Hence, I have decided to write this blog on the reasons why Hut 1 is inherently better and completely dominates Hut 2.

1. Hut one is bigger and caters to more students. The Hut is always bustling with tons of kids ranging from kindergarten to adults. We tutor the young ones in subjects such as reading and writing, high school kids come in for SATs and whatever other homework they need help with, and we have the occasional adult coming in to learn Spanish, or English for that matter!
2. Our tutors dominate! We can tutor all subjects. Whatever subject you need to be tutored in, we can do it. Even Chinese!!!!
3. We are much facier. We are open seven days a week during the school year! No matter what kind of a bind you are in, we are here for ya! Scheduling around sports proves to be no match for us. Come in on a Saturday or Sunday and knock out your school work before the week begins to get a head start.
Or newly renovated Underground is inundated with new and exciting under the sea decor.
4. We have a self built lifeguard chair. Built just for the manager, Samantha, we dominate the seating arrangements category!
5. Even though they seem to be cool over there they are merely an image of a younger brother stealing the appearance of his older brother so he can play off as “cool” in front of his friends.
6. It is not rare to find the owner Rob BBQing in the parking lot for all of the employees. We all know the way to a tutors’ heart is through their stomach… or their calculator.

All in all, both Huts are great. They both have amazingly qualified tutors with open arms ready to help each and every student that walks in the door. However, it wouldn’t be The Hut if there wasn’t a little friendly rivalry. We like to keep ourselves entertained around here 😉
