College Test Prep at Study Hut Consulting

March 21st, 2019

Young people feel pressure in two dimensions: quality and time. Students, particularly AP students, feel that they must be the best within a finite amount of time called childhood. Try though we must to alleviate their burdens, there are a few cases in life where the pressure is real. Einstein’s theory of relativity predicted just such a union between the dimensions of pressure: college test prep.

College prep at study hut consulting

Totally joking about Einstein’s theory (we offer AP Physics prep on his actual theory). But our team of nerds at Study Hut Consulting has a serious answer to the conundrum of the SAT and ACT. To master quality, we respond with one-on-one tutoring that’s tailored to each student’s strengths and weaknesses. To defeat time, we answer with experience. Our homemade courses are administered via online portal and workbook, achieving the constant feedback of online grading and the realism of paper tests. Each student progresses through our course in a unique order with unique emphasis, and completes many practice tests and problems along the way. As Bill Murray taught us in Groundhog Day, the easiest way to get a problem right is to have done it before.

Speaking of past experiences — as a student, I participated in Princeton Review’s SAT course. Having already scored very highly on their practice test, I was placed into the small, elite group that was likely to score perfect on the real deal. I was one of the lucky ones. But why should only those students with high first-time scores receive good tutoring? At Study Hut Consulting, we give every student one-on-one VIP treatment, regardless of their first attempt. We believe in the process. A student starting at 900 and one beginning at 1300 can both achieve hundreds of points of improvement in our college test prep. As tutors, we have the power to make both of those kids’ dreams come true. That’s why we do business.

But don’t take our word for it. We encourage our kids to do their due diligence, and we’d love for you to do the same. Stop on by for a free practice test and free consultation. You can reach us at (310) 379-1400 or practice those fill-in-the-blanks skills on our Contact Form, below. I’ll sign off this post with a College Test Prep Prayer:

God grant me the serenity

To guess on questions I cannot answer;

Courage to answer the ones I can;

And wisdom to know the difference.

The Independent School Alliance & Study Hut

November 6th, 2018

This past weekend, Study Hut was honored to have hosted an ISEE test prep weekend workshop at Westerly School in Long Beach.  The workshop was a two-day seminar with four class sections running concurrently catering to students ranging from 5th grade all the way up to 8th grade.  The workshop catered to students from the Independent School Alliance, and represented the beginning of a new partnership between Study Hut Tutoring and the Alliance.

The Independent School Alliance

The Independent School Alliance is a leading organization in private school admissions counseling and placement. It was founded by its member schools for the purpose of placing underrepresented students at the elementary and secondary levels. Since 1985, it has provided access and opportunities to thousands of students across Southern California. Its students become exemplary members of their independent school communities, and very often its member schools comment that their campuses are better places because of the presence of Alliance students.

The mission of the Independent School Alliance is to inform members of racial communities presently underrepresented in independent schools of the option of independent school education; to identify applicants from these communities and assist them in the application process; to provide ongoing support programs for students and their families’ and to act as a resource to member schools assisting them in their individual efforts to address issues of racial diversity and multicultural education.

The seminar included one ISEE Lower Level classroom, one ISEE Middle Level classroom, and two ISEE Upper Level classrooms running both Saturday and Sunday.  Students learned a wide variety of concepts and strategies, from process-of-elimination tips for the Quantitative Reasoning and Mathematics Achievement sections, to time management strategies and active reading note-taking techniques for the Verbal Reasoning and Reading Comprehension.  By all accounts, it was a massive success, and also a very rewarding experience for the Study Hut team.

What is the ISEE?
ISEE stands for Independent School Entrance Examination. It is a test that is a helpful tool in assessing schools: how do their students usually fare on the ISEE? This helps measure the caliber of the school. It is also a test that schools use to assess students’ readiness, in consideration for admission. There are three levels of the ISEE: Lower level, for entrance in grades 5–6; Middle level, for entrance in grades 7–8; Upper level, for entrance in grades 9–12.

What is on the ISEE?
All levels consist of five sections: Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Mathematics Achievement, and a 30-minute essay.

Students can take the ISEE up to three times in 12 months, and you can review the results before sharing them with your school! For more information (https://www.erblearn.org/parents/admissions-testing-isee).
