AVID SAT Prep in Redondo Beach

Study Hut has been collaborating with the AVID program providing AVID SAT Prep for 6 years.   AVID takes place every week with six tutors from our Redondo Beach Location that are hand picked to facilitate the AVID tutorials.  AVID SAT prep and test prep training is conducted by the owners of Study Hut Tutoring, and helps students improve upon their test prep skills.  The AVID sophomores begin with pre AVID SAT prep and AVID juniors dive deeper with full AVID SAT prep.

Avid SAT prep

During the AVID classes, each student comes prepared with their tutorial form filled out with their question or information that they want to review or understand better. Each student has a chance to get up and present their question to their small groups and then the tutor will help answer any questions needed while the other students take notes and participate in the discussion. Each student gets about 5-6 minutes for their individual question which makes the hour go by quickly once each student has presented.

We are able to track students progress and the students get points for their achievements, being engaging and participating in the group lessons. Another awesome collaboration we have going on with Peninsula is that a Study Hut manager along side a teacher lead ACT/SAT training as well.

There are about 25 students that are taught by one manager and one teacher that receive instruction and receive homework assignments to complete and to help track their growth. The sophomores receive test prep once per month and the juniors receive test prep help once per week. We use an online system that we use in office that helps track progress and makes for a smooth class and easy way to generate the information needed. The manager will help with the Math portion of the test prep and the teacher will help with the English portion of the test prep. We are very excited for the school year and to see many familiar faces around campus!

Free Practice SAT and ACT Exams

Practice SAT and ACT Exams

Study Hut Tutoring offers free practice SAT and ACT exams. It is important to know that tackling the SAT or ACT can be a daunting challenge for many students. Performing to the best of one’s availability is vital in order to strive for acceptance to increasingly competitive colleges and universities. Students are often unaware of how to effectively prepare for the SAT or ACT. Rest assured, Study Hut Tutoring in El Segundo is here to offer guidance and support through tailored test prep tutoring and free SAT and ACT practice tests.

In order to provide our students with specialized, tailored test ACT and SAT tutoring sessions, we encourage our students to complete a full length, free SAT or ACT practice test. We then critically analyze the results and prepare a tutoring plan tailored to our students, emphasizing focus on areas of potential improvement. As we move through scheduled tutoring sessions, students will return to take additional free SAT or ACT practice tests, which allows us to check our progress in real time and shift focus when the need is indicated by performance.

In addition to reviewing specific concepts and learning new strategies and test taking techniques, exercising to build test taking endurance is crucial. The SAT and ACT are each about four hours long. No matter how you cut it, four hours is a long time to maintain focus, flex cognitive abilities, and perform at a consistently high level. By completing free SAT or ACT practice tests, Study Hut students develop their ability to persevere through mental fatigue. Without a simulated experience made possible by full length practice tests, improving endurance is difficult, and Study Hut is pleased to offer this service to our students.

The fall SAT and ACT are approaching quickly, and here at Study Hut we are eager to see the performance of our prepared students and to observe them flourish. Having completed a personalized test prep plan, in conjunction with effective independent study and the completion of multiple SAT or ACT practice tests, our students will be confident and prepared to rise to the challenge on test day and endure through fatigue and difficulty.

A Timeline for ACT or SAT Prep

February 23rd, 2016

As we move into the spring of 2016, a lot of students and parents start wondering-should I be preparing for standardized tests? Do I take it in my junior year or senior year? Should I use the summer to prepare? At Study Hut, we can help you make sense of the chaos and create a timeline for ACT or SAT Prep.

When are the tests offered?

The tests are offered throughout the fall, winter and spring:

ACT                                                                       SAT

February 6, 2016                                              March 5, 2016

April 9, 2016                                                     May 7, 2016

June 11, 2016                                                    June 4, 2016

September 10, 2016                                        October 1, 2016

October 22, 2016                                             November 5, 2016

December 10, 2016                                         December 3, 2016

                                                                           January 28, 2017

February 11, 2017                                           March 11, 2017

April 8, 2017                                                    May 6, 2017

June 10, 2017                                                   June 3, 2017

So what’s the first step in the Timeline for ACT or SAT Prep?

At the Study Hut, the first step in test prep is always to take a free, full length practice test. These are generally offered every other Saturday throughout the year, and take about 4 hours. After the student takes the practice test, we will grade and evaluate the results and then set up a free consultation with the student and their parents to go over the results and our evaluation.

How long should I prep?

From there, test prep is usually a 4-6 month process. Here are three general timelines we recommend. (Green=start test prep, Blue=take the test)

Timeline for ACT or SAT Prep

The key is to put in the time when you have the time.

If you play a sport, it’s best not to try to cram prep in during season (although increasingly, sports are a year round commitment, there is usually a ‘slower’ period in which test prep would fit best). If you carry a heavy workload during the year, summer would be a better time.
At Study Hut, we can help you carve out the perfect prep schedule that fits YOU. Fill out the contact form to the right, or call/email us today to schedule your free practice test to get the ball rolling.

Hermosa Beach ACT & SAT Students

February 21st, 2016

Spring is around the corner and that means many high school students will be taking college admissions exams. Understandably, this can be a stressful time for these Hermosa Beach ACT & SAT Students, and as many of you may have heard, the SAT will be changing formats in March. The new SAT will now feature four sections: Reading, Writing, Math with calculator, and Math without calculator. Additionally, to the relief of many, there will no longer be a penalty for incorrect guesses. This means that, similar to the ACT, you should make sure to not to leave any questions blank. In fact, the new SAT looks very similar to the ACT in its structure with the important note that the SAT does not contain a science section, but instead contains two math sections.

Hermosa Beach ACT & SAT Students

For many Hermosa Beach ACT & SAT students, these changes are a great relief, while for others they are simply stress and pressure in another format. Either way, do not fear because Study Hut is here to help. At Study Hut Tutoring we provide close-knit 1-on-1 tutoring to help students prepare for the SAT and ACT exams. 1-on-1 SAT Classes

February 19th, 2015

Study Hut offers SAT 1-on-1 classes. If your student learns better in a group setting, then the class is a great choice. Ten is the maximum number of students we allow to be enrolled in the class at a time, so group sizes are small, and students can still get help if they get stuck on a concept. The class is seven weeks and meets twice a week for two hours.

One student, Erica, has already seen her score improve almost three hundred points since her first diagnostic practice test. The strategies taught in the class kept her from making silly mistakes that she had made before on previous tests. She also had a better understanding of which questions she should skip, whereas before she would go ahead and fill in an answer for every question.

Going into the test with knowledge of the strategies and the SAT layout decoded boosts confidence and helps to put even the most anxious test takers at ease. After the 1-on-1 class, our students walk into the SAT with confidence and the skills to ace it, and walk out with spectacular scores!

Tips for Acing the SAT

November 7th, 2014

Practice Tests

Take as many practice tests as you possibly can! The general types of questions on the SAT are usually very similar to previous tests, although the passages that you are being asked to answer questions on will differ. This will help you become familiar with the format of the questions on the test, and what specifically they are asking for. It really helps to recognize these patterns on the more difficult questions!

Go in With a Strategy

Every person’s strategy will be different for the SAT depending on his or her strengths. There are a few general things to keep in mind that are applicable to all students. First, remember that there is a guessing penalty on the SAT. Unlike the ACT, the SAT takes off one quarter of a point for every incorrect guess. It is usually not in your best interest to answer every single question on the SAT. If you can narrow it down to two answers that seem like they can work, it may be worth it to try and guess, but if you have no idea what the question is asking you should skip it.

Be Prepared

It would be a total bummer to go through all your test preparation and then have your score be affected because your calculator died or you didn’t have a good eraser. Make sure to always bring a back up calculator and all the supplies/identification you need on test day.     If you haven’t started preparing for the SAT, come take a diagnostic practice test at Study Hut! We can figure out a personalized package and program to get you your best score!

SAT vs. ACT

December 17th, 2012

The differences between the SAT and ACT are noticeable and students should make an informed decision as to which test is the right fit. Historically, the SAT has been the west coast college admissions exam and the ACT has been its fledging east coast twin. Each company has its origins rooted in their respective coasts, however, today, both exams are now universally accepted at almost every university nationwide. Yet, the big question on everyone’s minds still remains: which exam is the right fit for me?

In order to make that decision, it is wise and recommended to take each exam for a test drive. Take a practice diagnostic test for each exam. Study Hut Tutoring offers diagnostic testing for both exams on a bi-monthly basis for no cost. After each exam is scored, Study Hut will schedule a free consultation with you in order to evaluate your strengths and weaknesses on each exam. After reviewing both exams, you will have all the information to make a calculated decision. After all, it is recommended that students train more heavily for one exam in order to maximize scores.

At the end of the day give us a call and we will help guide you down the path of least resistance. We are available by phone, in person, or via email at any one of our four locations.

How to study for Science

December 6th, 2012

Biology can be a complex subject to grasp. Difficult terminology and concepts, typical of chemistry and physics, partnered with vast and often times redundant biophysical processes make General Biology, AP Biology and SAT Biology a hotbed of tutoring activity. Relating specific concepts within daily notes to the seemingly endless volumes of information in Bio texts is paramount to success in the classroom and on standardized tests.

Developing teaching and testing strategies that work is our passion. Our tutors formulate a step by step approach to address problem areas within the subject matter. Our tutors focus on relating in-class information to everyday case studies and experiences to help students identify with the subject matter. We feel that resolving conceptual errors and becoming versed in basic biological processes is the first step to success in Biology. Using advanced placement tests, practice SAT’s and in-house report cards, we are able to assess, in real-time, the progress our students are making.

During our one-on-one sessions, we provide a tailored experience that partners with the pupils own personal study strategy. We provide a wide range of study materials: Texts, workbooks, flashcards, SAT Prep, SAT Tests and online materials are all resources we utilize in order to help students gain a better understanding of the subject matter. Students are also paired with extremely capable and knowledgeable tutors who are familiar and have a background in subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. We do our very best to deliver the most advantageous tutoring session for each individual student.  Working with a tutor is much like working with a personal trainer:  we are here to make your “work out time” more efficient so your results are better and come faster.  We are not here to do their work for them, but to help them make the most of what little time they have!
