Study Hut College Tour Cal State Fullerton

March 5th, 2018

Among the many outstanding universities in California, the Study Hut College tour Cal State Fullerton adventure was pretty special.  California State University, Fullerton (CSUF), which is located in Orange County, is less than ten miles from Disneyland. Study Hut has taken it upon themselves to learn more information about the campus and their facilities to share with our students and community.

The university encompasses 240 acres with 8 colleges and 40,000 diverse students. CSUF prides itself in its diverse student body as it offers Diversity Initiatives and Resource Centers for African Americans, Asians, Latino/Chicano, LGBTQ, etc. CSUF also offers more than 100 undergraduate and graduate degrees, so students can explore their options and be able to concentrate on any desired academic field.

Of the many majors they offer, the most popular majors include: Communications, Art, Business, and Nursing. CSUF’s Mihaylo College of Business and Economics was deemed to be one of the “Best Business Schools” by Princeton Review and is ranked number one in the nation for awarding degreesto Hispanic students. CSUF’s Nursing department is one of the more highly coveted majors with only enrolling 40 students out of thousands of applicants. The CSUF Nursing graduate program in Nurse-Midwifery and Anesthesia is ranked one of the best by U.S. News & Word Report. The program has students follow a direct pathway where they obtain their degree and license all at once and the school also includes a Simulation Center, which puts the students into a real life medical environment.

Study Hut College Tour Cal State FullertonCSUF is highly known to be a “commuter campus,” but they do offer on-campus housing such as the freshman dormitories and student apartments. Campus housing is close to the local Gastronome that is equipped with a full buffet with even on-the-spot prepared omelets for breakfast. CSUF hosts a Discover Fest in the main quad during every semester, where they offer a wide range of opportunities for students that want to get involved. Students can learn about Greek Life, Study Abroad programs, internships, sports, undergrad research, and even about Nap Club. Each major also allows students to have the opportunity to obtain internships, such as Art majors who have the chance to be recruited by animation studios like Nickelodeon, Dreamworks, and Disney.

Prospective students considering applying to CSUF do not need to worry. They don’t need a ACT/SAT superscore, nor a perfect GPA. CSUF provides financial aid to 67% of the undergraduates, which makes it even more accessible. CSUF offers loads of chances for students to enjoy college life and succeed in the future. All they had to do is seize it.

Study Hut College Tour Cal Poly Pomona

March 1st, 2018

Last week was the Study Hut College Tour Cal Poly Pomona. As a graduate from the California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, I wasn’t sure what to expect from our sister school in Pomona.  Aside from normal rival bashing, I tried to keep an open mind when I toured their campus with my fellow college counselors from Study Hut.

Study Hut College Tour Cal Poly Pomona

I can say that Cal Poly Pomona is just as nice a campus as its sibling school to the north.  The land was donated by W.H. Kellogg, founder of Kellogg cereals, who used it for his Arabian horse breeding program and renowned rose garden, which are still running as a part of the terms of the donation.  There is also plenty of new architecture being built to keep things modern, yet the campus feels as cemented in the local scenery as it ever was.

The tour guides touted the campus’s small class sizes (35 on average), state of the art engineering labs (including a wind tunnel and earthquake simulator), and partnerships with firms such as NASA and Edison.  The opportunities for all its students are substantial, but the most impressive statistic is that more than 50 percent of students are able to graduate in 4 years or less!  For a state school, that is no doubt unparalleled.

As a true polytechnic university, Cal Poly Pomona keeps its reputation as one of the preeminent engineering schools in the state.  Obviously their Biology and Environmental programs are among its most popular as well, but the surprising discipline they bragged about was for hospitality management.  The Collins College for Hospitality is ranked #2 in the nation, and has its own hotel right near campus!

From its rustic scenery and accessible location, to its rich history and unrivaled academics, Cal Poly Pomona (not to be confused with Pomona College) has earned its place as a top institution in our state.  Any California resident should be proud to add this campus to his or her potential target schools.

Study Hut College Tour

February 26th, 2018

This past Presidents Day Weekend, some of Study Hut’s top tutors, counselors, and test prep gurus embarked upon our first annual Study Hut College Tour.  To call the trip a success would be an understatement, as we learned a plethora of new information about colleges that some of us knew very little about.  We wanted to visit a range of different types of universities, and our only criteria for year 1 was to visit local universities that most of the counselors had not visited before, so as to make the experience as new as possible for as many members of our team as possible.  The universities that we chose to visit do not reflect a judgment or position on behalf of our organization as to the admissions standards, prestige, academic quality, etc. of these universities, but rather as a starting point for conversation and exploration, and a launching point for knowledge gathering.

Study Hut College Tour

The Study Hut College Tour began on Friday at CSU Fullerton, the largest Cal State campus by student population.  Although Fullerton is a commuter campus, the on-campus housing was a pleasant surprise: it seemed like the type of place that most of us would love to live!  The facilities exceeded expectations, and we could not believe how much action there was on campus, even on a Friday.

Next, we hopped onto the freeway and checked out Cal Poly Pomona, one of the CSU system’s two polytechnic universities, which is nestled in the San Gabriel foothills.   With an emphasis on math, hard sciences, and engineering, among other popular majors, the oasis that is Cal Poly Pomona has quaint charm to it, especially given how close to Los Angeles the campus finds itself.

We continued the Study Hut College Tour by taking a tour of UC Riverside.  Overlooked by some of our students during the college application process, UCR students have several major advantages over students at other UC schools, namely that none of its majors are impacted.  Ease of access to classes is a major plus for many students at UCR.

To finish off the first annual Study Hut College Tour, our group decided to enjoy a self-guided bike tour of the Claremont Colleges, which turned out to be a fantastic decision.  We managed to tour all of the different schools on the campus, and the facilities were world class.

If you are interested in more details about our trip, please feel free to email rob@studyhut.com.  Also, please keep an eye out for more blog articles on this front; we plan to go into more detail about each school in the coming weeks.

2018 College Tour at UC Riverside

February 22nd, 2018

The 1st Annual Study Hut 2018 College Tour was a tremendous success.  Growing up in a southern California beach town is about as good as it gets, and, as such, we fortunate few sometimes forget about the abundance of college options that exist just a short drive from our beloved beach. A prime example of this is a school that was recently identified as the 58th best public school on Earth, and by Time magazine as the #1 school based on metrics of graduation rate, affordability, and available financial aid for students; this school is the University of California, Riverside (UCR). Study Hut staff recently took a trip to UCR to learn about the school and to share this information with our students and community.

Study Hut College Tour 2018 UC Riverside

Situated on nearly 1,200 acres at the foot of Box Springs Mountain in Riverside, California, is the campus of UCR. This sprawling park-like campus is a refuge in the hot and arid Inland Empire, boasting open green areas and citrus trees brimming with fruit waiting to be plucked and devoured by passing students en route to their next class or social event. The campus is home to approximately 25,000 undergraduate students, and almost 70% of these undergrad students live on campus or in school-owned housing, creating a young and bustling environment on school grounds. The school offers a wide variety of bachelor degree programs, totaling 101 options for students to choose from. Furthermore, UCR is home to over 350 student organizations and clubs, creating myriad opportunities for students to engage with one another outside of the classroom.

The college application process has become so competitive that students often feel as though they have no realistic options without holding a 4.0+GPA and near perfect SAT/ACT score. This simply is not the case. UCR is an excellent example of a UC school that is academically within the reach of many students. Additionally, UCR makes an exerted effort to provide financial aid to all students who need it, making higher education at a world-class institution attainable to many.

Often seen only in the shadows of the better-known UC schools, UC Riverside has the faculty, resources, campus, and student body to stand on its own, and to be an excellent consideration for southern California students looking for a UC option.
