ACT and SAT Tests
Taking the ACT and SAT tests can seem like a wild card in college admissions. Nobody can say for sure how heavily these scores weigh in the decisions of admissions committees, as every college has its own ideas about what the scores do or do not represent.
What we can say is that, in general, standardized testing is the second-most compelling factor in admissions to American colleges (behind GPA). And large universities, dealing with tens of thousands of applications every year, tend to pay extra attention to ACT and SAT tests.
Again, these situations are subjective. No SAT score stands alone; the entire application gives it context. But it is this very subjectivity and unpredictability that makes standardized test prep worth investing in. In college admissions, the stakes are high — students have a lot to win or lose — so it pays to prepare.
At the Study Hut we offer comprehensive tutoring for the three major college entrance exams — the PSAT, SAT and ACT tests — and for many of the SAT Subject Tests, which most major universities now require students to take. The advantage of the Study Hut is that all our sessions are one-on-one. Group test prep can waste a student’s time by focusing on material he already understands, at the expense of not covering material he is insecure about. In our one-on-one scenario, we don’t have to be concerned with appealing to a crowd. Rather, we tailor our tutoring programs to precisely match what each student needs to do as well as he can.
The first step to prepare for these tests is to take a full-length practice test. If you aren’t familiar with one or more of these tests, we would be happy to set up a free meeting to go over any questions you may have.
