Manhattan Beach Writing Tutor

November 28th, 2016

Are you looking for a Manhattan Beach writing tutor?  Look no further!  Writing essays is one of the hardest tasks for students. They wonder: where do I put the thesis? What’s the purpose of a topic sentence? What goes in my conclusion? Why do I need a hook? Why can’t my hook be a rhetorical question? (E.g., Have you ever been stranded on a desert island?) What’s an anchor? If you struggle with these simple questions, perhaps a Study Hut Tutoring session in writing is the solution.

Most students don’t hesitate to get help with their math or science homework, but writing is often overlooked. Having an expert Manhattan Beach writing tutor on the team helps immensely.  Writing is one of the most important academic skills. Study Hut provides a great space for students to improve their writing. In a typical session, we start by reviewing the prompt in detail. We also look at the rubric (how students will be assessed) and all supplementary materials (e.g., outline, text, handouts). It’s important to bring your book and class handouts for our study session!

One of the problems students face is that English teachers teach writing differently. One teacher may be a huge fan of quotation hooks, while another teacher may hate them with a passion. Tutors encourage students to carefully consider their teacher’s writing preferences. We ask questions about what students have learned, and how they will be graded. Study Hut tutors tailor each session to the needs of the student as well as the expectations of the teacher.

The thesis statement is usually the most important part of our tutoring sessions, and it’s the heart of the essay. We help students develop a solid argument for their essay that clearly maps out the rest of the paragraphs. The part of the thesis that most students ignore is the theme. Even though theme isn’t a requirement of the thesis, it often relates to the deeper meaning. Themes can be tricky. But once we point them out, students are able to understand the prompt in a much deeper way.

It’s easy to put the focus on grammatical errors, but it’s the ideas that often need the most attention. We’ve all been on the other side of the dreaded red pen. However, the items that typically need the most attention include: organization, flow, sequence of arguments, and clarity of ideas. Most students struggle with what to write in each part of the essay. Once we demystify the structure, writing becomes a much more logical process. Writing tutoring is a great opportunity for students to improve their writing skills.

Getting extra help with writing gives students a leg up in high school, college, and beyond. Many teachers, professors, and employers complain that their students and employees don’t know how to write. Writing is a powerful skill that can make your son or daughter stand out.

Free Practice SAT and ACT Exams

August 18th, 2016

Practice SAT and ACT Exams

Study Hut Tutoring offers free practice SAT and ACT exams. It is important to know that tackling the SAT or ACT can be a daunting challenge for many students. Performing to the best of one’s availability is vital in order to strive for acceptance to increasingly competitive colleges and universities. Students are often unaware of how to effectively prepare for the SAT or ACT. Rest assured, Study Hut Tutoring in El Segundo is here to offer guidance and support through tailored test prep tutoring and free SAT and ACT practice tests.

In order to provide our students with specialized, tailored test ACT and SAT tutoring sessions, we encourage our students to complete a full length, free SAT or ACT practice test. We then critically analyze the results and prepare a tutoring plan tailored to our students, emphasizing focus on areas of potential improvement. As we move through scheduled tutoring sessions, students will return to take additional free SAT or ACT practice tests, which allows us to check our progress in real time and shift focus when the need is indicated by performance.

In addition to reviewing specific concepts and learning new strategies and test taking techniques, exercising to build test taking endurance is crucial. The SAT and ACT are each about four hours long. No matter how you cut it, four hours is a long time to maintain focus, flex cognitive abilities, and perform at a consistently high level. By completing free SAT or ACT practice tests, Study Hut students develop their ability to persevere through mental fatigue. Without a simulated experience made possible by full length practice tests, improving endurance is difficult, and Study Hut is pleased to offer this service to our students.

The fall SAT and ACT are approaching quickly, and here at Study Hut we are eager to see the performance of our prepared students and to observe them flourish. Having completed a personalized test prep plan, in conjunction with effective independent study and the completion of multiple SAT or ACT practice tests, our students will be confident and prepared to rise to the challenge on test day and endure through fatigue and difficulty.

Back to School Tutoring

August 16th, 2016

This week, Manhattan Beach Study Hut welcomes back many of its returning students as they begin back to school tutoring!

Like summer and fall tutoring, back-to-school tutoring serves a unique purpose. Our tutors help students wrap up summer assignments, while prepping them for the year ahead. Our Manhattan Beach tutors are especially suited to this task because they are familiar with the local schools’ books, teachers, and yes, rubrics. As I write, our expert English tutors are busy guiding kids from MBMS and Mira Costa through their summer reading assignments.

What can students expect to get from back-to-school tutoring?

Back-to-school Tutoring helps students relax into the new year and approach their classes with confidence.

The first week of school is super busy. For many classes, homework starts on day one, even if the student hasn’t yet found time to do the work. Our veteran science tutors can help answer those important questions, like how many hours to set aside each week for biology or chemistry. With our help, the student set a good pace from the get-go, so they won’t have to play catch up before mid-terms.

We can also help kids in grades K-12 schedule their commitments (and their fun time), so they don’t end up having to drop a favorite club or sport. Our goal is to coach students in how to handle all of their school commitments, and August is like our pre-training season.

While it’s smart to get a head start in all your classes, it’s especially important in cumulative subjects like math. Having a few extra weeks can make a big difference, especially as the learning curve gets steeper. Each year, the students learn not only new algorithms, but also new vocabulary and symbols. Geometry opens with proofs and logic problems; Algebra, with properties and proportions. All that newness can be overwhelming. With our experienced math tutors, students can familiarize themselves with the textbook, and develop smart study strategies before a clock starts counting down to the first test.

If you are a new student, there is an additional advantage to starting in August. The student and tutor can build up a good rapport, figure out how they work best together, and establish a good routine before school starts.

So, welcome back to those who’ve been coming for years! Welcome to the newbies!

And good luck all with the year ahead!

Newport Beach Math Tutor

December 10th, 2015

Study Hut Tutoring is a place where students can come to reinforce math topics. All sessions with the tutor are tailored to the needs of each student. Whether they are looking to prepare for a upcoming test or if they wanted to review problems they had in the past, we will make sure that all their needs are met with the Newport Beach math tutors.

Newport Beach Math Tutor

The local tutors make sure that each session goes at a comfortable pace for any student. This is especially important during one-on-one appointments because this will allow the student to absorb the material completely. Many times in a classroom setting, the teacher will either go too quickly or they will be unable to explain a concept clearly enough for everyone to grasp. Our tutors do not move on until they are sure the student has mastered the topic.

Not only do our Newport Beach math tutors help students with math concepts, but they also teach study skills that will help students in future chapters so they can be better equipped and prepared to tackle any daunting math problem. This includes formatting math problems neatly and clearly to eliminate any errors due to misreading and having a very organized planner so that homework isn’t overdue, quizzes aren’t forgotten, and tests are not ill-prepared.

Finally, our tutors put a lot of effort to ensure that Study Hut is a place where students can be both at ease and focused. We want to have a relaxing atmosphere where students love to come because they feel accomplished by the time they leave. Tutoring is effective only if the student likes to come initially, and has a level of trust with their tutor.

Contact a Newport Beach math tutor today so we can get a feel for how your student is progressing. We can work together to provide the skills necessary so they can become a successful math wizard!

El Segundo Chemistry Tutors Love Bond(s)

November 22nd, 2015

The name’s bond, ionic bond.

El Segundo Chemistry tutors-bond

In the spirit of the latest 007 movie, Study Hut wants to talk about bonds. El Segundo Chemistry tutors have been talking bonds a lot lately with their chemistry students. In chemistry, there are two main types of bonds that you will run into (none of them named James!) and they are very different!

Covalent bonds

  1. Share the desired electron(s)-This means that the electron spends its time in the shells of both atoms in the bond

  1. This sharing can be equal (nonpolar)….

  1. or unequal (polar)…

If one atom has a stronger electronegativity (like attractiveness to an electron) then the shared electron will spend more time with that atom than the other, giving it a slightly negative charge and leaving the other one with a slightly positive charge.

  1. Occur between two nonmetals

Ionic bonds

  1. Steal the desired electron(s)-In this type of bond, the electron is not passed back and forth like a tennis ball. In this type of bond, one atom plucks the electron right out of the other atom’s valence shell and takes it for itself. Now one atom has an extra electron (now it has more electrons than protons so it has a NEGATIVE charge) and the other atom is short an electron (now it has less electrons than protons so it has a POSITIVE charge). Well these two differently charged atoms are attracted to each other and so they hang out together.

El Segundo Chemistry Tutors - ionic

  1. Occur between a nonmetal and a metal.
This is because nonmetals have almost full valence shells (their p shell’s are so close to full!!) and metals have almost empty valence shells, so metals gladly give their valence electrons to the desperate nonmetals giving everyone an even 8 valence electrons.

For more on bonds and other chemistry help, come on in to El Segundo Study Hut right behind Starbucks. We’ve got plenty of El Segundo Chemistry tutors who would love to translate chemistry into a language that makes sense to you. Our one-on-one sessions guarantee that you will get the support you need to prepare for that test, bring up that grade, and pass that class!

Excellent Playa del Rey Tutoring Option

November 17th, 2015

It has come as a slight surprise how many new students have been coming to Study Hut from Playa del Rey and Westchester for tutoring over the last year, and we’ve had an even more noticeable influx in September and October than in the past. For residents, the fact that new community members are searching for “Playa del Rey Tutoring” or “Math tutor in Playa del Rey” is probably an excellent sign, both for property values and overall neighborhood prosperity. But is also means that more and more families are seeking to enrich their children’s understanding of academic concepts outside of school, which should have a solid effect in the classroom as well. While many of our students that come to Study Hut for tutoring from Playa del Rey and Westchester go to St. Bernard High School and Westchester High School, others go to Loyola High School, Harvard-Westlake, and a variety of other local private high schools.

At Study Hut, we know the Playa del Rey tutoring options better than most, as many of the tutors on our team enjoy living in the quaint beach town. Although parents might luck into a flier for a local high school student who is looking to make a few bucks tutoring on the side after school, the options are generally very limited, and parents often find out fast that local college students are not the most reliable, even if they do make for affordable, flexible tutors. Typically, the hassle is not worth the effort, and that is the story we continue to hear from the parents of our current students. Whether families are looking for a chemistry tutor, a math tutor, ACT tutoring, or some other subject tutoring, Study Hut Tutoring in El Segundo is extremely convenient for Playa del Rey and Westchester families seeking a cool, relaxing tutoring facility with smart, young, energetic tutors.

Chemistry Tutoring in Redondo Beach

November 15th, 2015

Sophomore or Junior year is hard enough, you don’t need to struggle with chemistry too! Taking AP Chem Senior year can be even worse! No need to drive for hours or hire Princeton professors, you can find great one-on-one chemistry tutoring in Redondo Beach with experienced tutors. Here are some tips from one of our tutors to get you started:

  1. Get started now

Chemistry is one of those subjects that builds on itself, so don’t fall behind. If you don’t understand something at the beginning of the semester, chances are it will come back to bite you later. For example, significant figures. Learn your sig fig rules now and practice, because you’ll be using them all year. Don’t lose points on questions you answer correctly but forget to put in sig figs!

  1. Get a calculator and use it

You won’t be allowed a graphing calculator, so buy a scientific calculator at the beginning of the semester and get comfortable with it. Read the manual if you need to, or Google how to type in certain numbers (ex: try typing in the number of molecules in 1 mole of a substance). So many students can follow a formula and write out the math properly, but make mistakes typing it into a calculator. Don’t borrow your friend’s calculator just to take your test – chances are you won’t know how to use it, or you’ll waste time figuring out where the 10^x button is. That being said…

  1. Always, always, always check your work

Maybe you wrote down the right number to begin with, but you didn’t copy it properly. Maybe you thought “megagrams” meant “0.01 g” (hint: it doesn’t). Maybe you left off a zero when you punched the numbers into your calculator. Always look at your answer and look back at the question. Does the size of the number make sense? Are there 100 centimeters in a millimeter, or is it 100 millimeters in one centimeter (learn your Greek prefixes)? Don’t worry, fix your answer. I won’t tell.

Need more help? Go to Palos Verdes High School or Palos Verdes Peninsula High School? Have a test tomorrow? Luckily, you can find good, local chemistry tutoring in Redondo Beach to get you through the year (and maybe even start having fun). Each tutor has taken chemistry from different teachers and has a different set of tips and tricks; let Study Hut help you find the right fit for you. Give us an hour, and we’ll help you see where you’re going wrong, show you study hacks, and check your homework step by step. Chemistry is what makes our world work the way it does, the least you can do is try to understand it!

Palos Verdes Spanish Tutor

November 12th, 2015

Struggling to understand Spanish? It used to be easier, right? But then all of a sudden, you get dumped with a mountain of new verb conjugations, subjunctive moods, grammar and vocabulary, and even though you try really hard to understand the material, it’s just not clicking.

Well, your worries are over: come down to Study Hut Redondo Beach to see a Palos Verdes Spanish tutor! Located on the outskirts of the Riviera on Avenue I, we’re ready to get you back on track to ace every Spanish test and to boost your confidence in your writing and speaking abilities. Even if you feel like there’s no way that you can catch up–that there’s so much material and you don’t know where to begin–don’t doubt yourself! You can do it, and we want to help.

Palos Verdes Spanish Tutor

The Study Hut is a tutoring organization that has coached Spanish students in the South Bay for years. We employ local college graduates well-versed in the language, and thanks to their expertise and dedication to the students, we have seen many success stories. Most recently, one of our current seniors, Joey, was struggling in Spanish 3 for most of his junior year. He fell behind early on, and felt that he couldn’t catch up.

BUT, once he started coming in to see a Palos Verdes Spanish tutor once a week, then twice a week, and finally three times a week, he improved dramatically! We boosted his grade from an F to a B in just a few months, and by the end of the year, he could conjugate the preterite, imperfect, present perfect, past perfect, conditional and future tenses no problem. Apart from conjugations, Joey also learned to how and when to use the subjunctive mood, and increased his efficiency in remembering new vocabulary. Over the course of a semester of working with a Palos Verdes Spanish tutor, he not only grew more confident in using Spanish, he also acquired crucial study skills that transferred over to his other classes, and will continue to assist him throughout his education.

So, do you want to improve? Think you’re willing to give us a chance? Go ahead and fill out the contact form on this page or give us a ring at (310)540-5888. We’re looking forward to meeting you and helping you succeed! ¡Suerte!

LSAT Tutoring-improve your score!

November 8th, 2015

With the opening of Hut Educational Consulting across from Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach, our team of tutors and counselors here at Study Hut has expanded its range of services to include some of the tougher post-graduate admissions tests, including but not limited to the LSAT. While some of our team members have been doing LSAT tutoring for several years, others are brand new to it and have had to commit to a full-scale refresher in order to get caught up to speed with recent changes to the test, as well as the specific tutoring strategies that are critical for students in each of the sections on the LSAT. When tutoring a student for the LSAT, it is absolutely critical for LSAT tutors to understand their specific students’ strengths and weaknesses. A specific strategy or time-management approach that may work for a student who has just begun his or her training may not be effective for a high-performing, well-prepared LSAT student looking to bump up his or her score by just a few points.

LSAT tutoring

Although students often report that the dreaded Games sections is the most difficult section and accordingly think that the majority of training time should be allocated toward practicing those exercises, that is not always the case for every student. Oftentimes, students think that they need the more LSAT tutoring in the Games section, but they actually just need to get a few basic concepts clarified. Many students are able to bump up their scores quite significantly in the Reading Comprehension and Logical Reasoning sections through hard work, consistent practice, and some support on tough questions from an LSAT tutor. At Study Hut Tutoring and Hut Educational Consulting, we are her to help answer those tough questions and give our students an edge with LSAT tutoring that will yield real results.
