After School Tutoring

March 21st, 2018

After school tutoring is very helpful.  It is even more helpful is you are busy with sports.  In this article we will discuss how, like sports, in this case baseball, after school tutoring is very beneficial to help with the mental components of the rigors of school.

After school tutoring

Baseball is a beautiful game. Name another sport where as long as a player is successful three out of every ten at-bats they are considered an all-star. Often times, however, young players take this concept into their academics.  A three out of ten on a math test is “Bad News Bears” in terms of eligibility. And sadly, grades aren’t like batting averages or ERA’s.

In the long-term scheme of things, students are actually what matters.  High school athletes don’t have it easy. In fact, they have incredibly packed schedules that challenge them physically and mentally. Not only do they have class, homework and family obligations, but they have to make time for practices, games and workouts.  All this leads to added stress, and unfortunately added shortcuts. Many student-athletes, such as baseball players, feel like they don’t have enough time in the day and neglect their studies.  Study Hut exists for students of all types, including the busy baseball player. It’s tutors recognize how taxing student-athletes’ schedules can be considering many of them were once in their cleats.  Study Hut is as versatile as a star utility baseball player, as it’s open from 12 P.M. to 10 P.M., making time for even the busiest schedules.  Tutors address a student’s needs from individual subject matter to overall organization. They value teamwork first and foremost, as success in both the classroom and on the field rely on a number of people.  Think of a tutor as an scholastic coach. Although a player can try and learn a skill on their own, it’s a coach’s job is to help them master it.  Practice is key. Without it, the greats of the game would have never found their way to Cooperstown.  Step out onto the diamond that is Study Hut where each session is an hour-long practice toward higher academia.

The student has become so interested in marine science that he has gone whale-watching to see his studies in action.

The cleanliness of our oceans has become such a popular concern that students are participating in beach cleanups, led by the Surfrider Foundation Newport Beach chapter. However, nothing beats a Newport math tutor that can help you with your step-by-step problem solving process and keep you accountable every step of the way.  Someone that has tutored the students in your same class last year is going to know what comes next, and where students struggle.  Moreover, you’re going to get help with custom practice quizzes, future concepts, and you can even repair missing gaps from previous years’ math classes.

Free Practice SAT and ACT Exams

August 18th, 2016

Practice SAT and ACT Exams

Study Hut Tutoring offers free practice SAT and ACT exams. It is important to know that tackling the SAT or ACT can be a daunting challenge for many students. Performing to the best of one’s availability is vital in order to strive for acceptance to increasingly competitive colleges and universities. Students are often unaware of how to effectively prepare for the SAT or ACT. Rest assured, Study Hut Tutoring in El Segundo is here to offer guidance and support through tailored test prep tutoring and free SAT and ACT practice tests.

In order to provide our students with specialized, tailored test ACT and SAT tutoring sessions, we encourage our students to complete a full length, free SAT or ACT practice test. We then critically analyze the results and prepare a tutoring plan tailored to our students, emphasizing focus on areas of potential improvement. As we move through scheduled tutoring sessions, students will return to take additional free SAT or ACT practice tests, which allows us to check our progress in real time and shift focus when the need is indicated by performance.

In addition to reviewing specific concepts and learning new strategies and test taking techniques, exercising to build test taking endurance is crucial. The SAT and ACT are each about four hours long. No matter how you cut it, four hours is a long time to maintain focus, flex cognitive abilities, and perform at a consistently high level. By completing free SAT or ACT practice tests, Study Hut students develop their ability to persevere through mental fatigue. Without a simulated experience made possible by full length practice tests, improving endurance is difficult, and Study Hut is pleased to offer this service to our students.

The fall SAT and ACT are approaching quickly, and here at Study Hut we are eager to see the performance of our prepared students and to observe them flourish. Having completed a personalized test prep plan, in conjunction with effective independent study and the completion of multiple SAT or ACT practice tests, our students will be confident and prepared to rise to the challenge on test day and endure through fatigue and difficulty.

Free SAT ACT Practice Tests

July 22nd, 2016

Study Hut Tutoring offers free SAT ACT practice tests. The South Bay is filled with a variety of companies that offer training for the SAT, ACT, ISEE, HSPT, SSAT, GRE, LSAT, and every other kind of test you can imagine. Some offer just group classes, others do one-on-one. Some will come to your house, while many will hold lessons in their office. Curriculums change, strategies differ, and all of them have their pros and cons. However, one thing cannot be ignored no matter what kind of training you seek: Make sure you are given plenty of full length practice tests!

DSC_0190

Whether you are training for a test or preparing for a marathon, you cannot adequately improve unless you first know where you are starting. For test training, it is imperative that you take an actual certified test (whichever one you are preparing for) so you get a good sense of what the test is, and we get an accurate reading of where you are starting. At Study Hut, we call this a Diagnostic Test. Armed with this report of your greatest strengths and most glaring weaknesses, we can create a tailored curriculum and study plan that fits YOU! This will mean a much more efficient use of both our times, and maximize our results.

Throughout your training, it is paramount to take officially sanctioned, full length practice tests every few weeks. Not only will this help us track your progress toward your ultimate score goal, but it gives you a safe arena to practice the concepts and strategies that we have been teaching you. It’s like sparing for a boxer, or a fully-padded practice for a football player! We can then analyze your performance, question by question, to see where your breakdowns were. This “game tape” will then be used to show you the benefits of what we are doing, and show you the dangers of falling back into old habits.

Long-story-longer, any training regimen, be it academic or athletic, needs to be anchored with an initial Diagnostic Test, and a healthy amount of Practice Tests. They are the only way to ensure broad and efficient training, and a high quality result. Study Hut offers free diagnostic and practice tests for every standardized test you can imagine. To sign up for one, just fill out a contact form on the right, and a manager will call you shortly.
Happy Training!

Early College High School

April 19th, 2016

Students in Newport Mesa Unified School District are starting to look more and more for alternatives to Corona del Mar High School and Newport Harbor High School, despite ever-increasing API scores and the district’s surging popularity. While both CDM and Newport Harbor are great schools by almost any objective standard, Newport Mesa USD is now offering a smaller alternative called Early College High School (ECHS). Early College High School is a public high school within the Newport Mesa district, however it is much smaller, operating at a maximum of 400 students. This allows students to take college-level courses and earn college credits while still in high school in a much more intimate environment. Students can earn up to a full year of college credit depending on their choice of classes due to their partnership with Coastline Community College. Because of this partnership, Newport Beach students are able to earn free college credit while still getting their high school diploma.

Due to the small class sizes at Early College High School, they are able to provide a family-like environment. This includes access to college and high school counselors. They also foster this “family” like atmosphere with campus-wide competitions and events. This family, however, is focused on preparing for and attending college. With a 100% graduation rate and top API scores, Early College High School has a lot to offer Newport Beach students. The OC Register rated Early College High School one of the Top Ten schools in Orange County for the past three years in a row. Early College High School can serve as a great opportunity for driven students who are looking for a smaller learning environment that can support their goals.

In order to seize this opportunity, students must apply using the application available on earlycollege.nmusd.us. To find out more information check out this great flier.

Applied Concepts: Common Core in Real Life

March 3rd, 2016

It is post- finals here in Newport Beach and you know what that means: time for a fresh start! New chapters, new lessons, and a ton of new material in our various courses. As we dive in here at Study Hut Newport Beach, our students start to wonder WHY all of this information is relevant. “After the test I’m not going to need to remember this,” they say. “Where will I find Common Core in real life?”

Common Core in Real Life

Well, the past couple weeks of tutoring sessions have been all about relating our school concepts to those of daily life. Applying concepts like Common Core Math, Chemistry, Biology– you name it!–can be tough. Our tutoring sessions relate these subjects to a better understanding of the world around us.

In Chemistry, Newport students have been working on papers and powerpoints exposing each of the Elements of the Periodic Table. Students found that Hydrogen contributes to plant fertilizers in gardens, while Nitrogen plays a part in cleaning supplies.

In Common Core Math, high school students are struggling with graphing piece- wise equations, but find it helpful to conceptualize these sporadic values with examples such as, test grades, or job wages. Common Core in real life is not only present, but extremely relevant.

In Biology, students are not simply memorizing cell terminology on notecards, but more importantly they are putting vocabulary into their own words. For example DNA is “the instruction manual of the human body.”

All in all, we have been working hard the past few weeks to make sense of the material their teachers are throwing at us. Not only does it help on quizzes and tests for students to understand these topics in their own manner, but it also reminds them that what they are learning now will help them down the road.
