Consistent ACT SAT Preparation

October 9th, 2018

Consistent ACT SAT Preparation: The Key to Getting that High SAT or ACT Score

Being consistent can be challenging, especially when you are a junior in high school. You have a lot on your plate with your classes and you may be on a sports team, part of a club, or on student council. Now you have to start thinking about which colleges you might want to apply to next year and preparing to take the ACT or the SAT (sign up ). All of this can consume a lot of time and make it hard to find time in your academic or extracurricular performance to get ready for standardized tests – the SAT and the ACT. That being said, it is extremely important to remain consistent when you are preparing to take the ACT or the SAT. Having consistent ACT SAT preparation is key to succeeding on this important test.

ACT SAT Preparation

When you begin your ACT test prep or SAT test prep, it is important to create a study plan and stick to it. If you hire a tutor to help you with your ACT or SAT test prep, they can help create this study plan with you based on your specific needs. It is important to be consistent in the time you dedicate to ACT or SAT test prep. Choose a day and time that works best for you each week and dedicate this to test prep. This will ensure that you remain consistent in the time and effort you are putting in.

On that same note, it is important that you always do any homework or quizzes assigned to you by your test prep program or tutor. The purpose of these assignments is to give you extra exposure to ACT or SAT questions, but also to provide more practice on test-taking strategies. The more consistently you practice active reading and test-taking strategies, the more consistent you will be in implementing these while taking the test. Consistency in ACT or SAT test prep will better prepare you for taking the test and allow you to remain consistent in your other commitments as well.

If you have any questions about how to come up with such a schedule or get a consistent tutor for either of these tests, don’t hesitate to call Justin at the Redondo Beach Study Hut – 310-540-5888.  He is available and knowledgeable about what it takes to get the score you need to get into the school you want.

Senioritis Tutoring Prevention Specialists

Senioritis tutoring

Are you or a loved one in your senior year of high school? Are you suffering from extreme academic apathy? How many times this school year have you uttered the phrases, “I’m so over this,” and “I literally can’t even?” Do you roam the hallways feeling like an adult among children? Do you frequently fantasize about lying around in your college dorm room, tapping your phone screen, Instagramming the day away? If you relate to these questions on a personal level, you may have senioritis. Senioritis is contagious, and once you contract it, it’s tough to shake. Symptoms include: developing poor study patterns, free-falling grades, not taking the college admissions process seriously, and worst of all, getting dropped from a college because of a weak final semester. Cognitive Skills Workshop

June 6th, 2018

The Cognitive Skills Workshop at Study Hut Tutoring is the Gold Standard in reading and writing workshops.  Nothing is more vital to success in school than the ability to read and write. From English papers to lab reports to college essays, students are frequently asked to express their thoughts in clear and concise language. Of course, writing well can be challenging for students, and doing so requires consistent practice. That’s where the Study Hut comes in! Our summer Cognitive Skills Workshop helps students drastically improve their reading comprehension and writing.

So what exactly does our Cognitive Skills Workshop entail? We tailor our programs to cater to students from elementary school through high school. With our younger students, we read through books and stories and work on activities that will strengthen their reading comprehension, grammar, spelling, and vocabulary. We teach them the basics of essay writing, and practice structuring a solid five paragraph essay. Students have a blast reading engaging stories and learning to find their voice!

With our older students, we dive into more complex textual analysis, grammar, and essay writing. We teach students how to write a fabulous thesis statement. Our team of enthusiastic, experienced tutors works closely with students to teach them how to write topic sentences, find useful evidence to support their claims, and write effective supporting details. We also practice vocabulary with our students, which helps them prepare for the SAT and ACT. What’s more, we arm students with note-taking techniques that help students process information. Almost every teacher asks students to take notes, but rarely do they teach students how to take notes well!

There’s no doubt that reading and writing are incredibly vital skills inside and outside of the classroom. Here at the Study Hut, we believe that every student has the ability to read well and write beautifully. Our Cognitive Skills Workshop gives students the tools to feel confident when they put pen to paper. The amazing thing about writing is that it teaches students to express themselves. Nothing is more rewarding than being able to express one’s thoughts as they were meant to be heard!

After School Tutoring

March 21st, 2018

After school tutoring is very helpful.  It is even more helpful is you are busy with sports.  In this article we will discuss how, like sports, in this case baseball, after school tutoring is very beneficial to help with the mental components of the rigors of school.

After school tutoring

Baseball is a beautiful game. Name another sport where as long as a player is successful three out of every ten at-bats they are considered an all-star. Often times, however, young players take this concept into their academics.  A three out of ten on a math test is “Bad News Bears” in terms of eligibility. And sadly, grades aren’t like batting averages or ERA’s.

In the long-term scheme of things, students are actually what matters.  High school athletes don’t have it easy. In fact, they have incredibly packed schedules that challenge them physically and mentally. Not only do they have class, homework and family obligations, but they have to make time for practices, games and workouts.  All this leads to added stress, and unfortunately added shortcuts. Many student-athletes, such as baseball players, feel like they don’t have enough time in the day and neglect their studies.  Study Hut exists for students of all types, including the busy baseball player. It’s tutors recognize how taxing student-athletes’ schedules can be considering many of them were once in their cleats.  Study Hut is as versatile as a star utility baseball player, as it’s open from 12 P.M. to 10 P.M., making time for even the busiest schedules.  Tutors address a student’s needs from individual subject matter to overall organization. They value teamwork first and foremost, as success in both the classroom and on the field rely on a number of people.  Think of a tutor as an scholastic coach. Although a player can try and learn a skill on their own, it’s a coach’s job is to help them master it.  Practice is key. Without it, the greats of the game would have never found their way to Cooperstown.  Step out onto the diamond that is Study Hut where each session is an hour-long practice toward higher academia.

Homework Help

March 8th, 2018

What does my child gain from getting homework help from a tutor?

While some of the students here at The Hut have specific subjects that they come in for help with, many of them, especially middle school and early high school students, come in for general homework help. Many of these students are already doing well in their classes, so it would be easy to question what benefit they get from “simply” doing their homework with a tutor.

Homework help

However, as many of our tutors can attest, even students who are completing their homework on time, turning their work in, and passing their tests are often still making mistakes in their homework habits that can come back to hurt them later on. For example, one student was getting all of the correct answers on her math homework and doing well on her math tests.

A simple answer check and grade check would have indicated that there was nothing she needed to work on with a tutor. However, with closer examination, her tutor realized that her work was a mess. She was skipping steps in her work by doing the math in her head, not putting new steps in the problem on a new line, and sometimes was making easy-to-avoid math errors because of this. In addition, when work isn’t neat, when students do start making mistakes it is very difficult for them to go back in their work and figure out where they went wrong—which makes it even harder to fix the mistake! When her tutor noticed the problems in her work, they worked together to figure out strategies that would work for her to make her work neater and to avoid making mistakes in the future. While homework mistakes like this can often slip under the radar during middle school when classes are still easy (at least relative to high school!), it is crucial for a tutor to catch them early on so that students have already solidified positive homework habits by the time they get to more difficult classes. In difficult classes, good homework habits can make the difference between an A and a B or between passing and not passing.

Writing Tutoring

February 6th, 2018

Many parents are interested in writing tutoring in order to enrich their kids’ writing skills.  The purpose of this blog is to help inform and inspire parents with content that will help their children achieve all their academic goals.  Below you will find some ideas to help get you started with incorporating writing skills into every day life.

Writing tutoring

With the adoption of Common Core Skills, writing tutoring and subsequently writing skills are taught differently than in the past.  Rather than being approached as a stand-alone subject, students are being asked to write in a variety of contexts that span across the curriculum.  The concept that writing is a useful and valuable skill can be reinforced by incorporating it into day-to-day situations .  Children’s writing skills can be enriched by creating an environment where the written word is given lots of time, space and energy.

This can be done many different ways – here are some examples of ways parents can help their kids become better writers.

  1. Start out by establishing a place for writing in the home.  Creating a writer’s nook or clearing off a desk creates an inviting atmosphere.
  2. Make sure your kid has all the writing materials they need,  such pens and journals.  If your student has already mastered basic penmanship skills and has a preference for typing, consider giving him or her a keyboard attachment to convert any tablet into a writing machine!
  3. Share holiday cards with your children and encourage them to participate in letter or email writing to communicate with family and friends.
  4. Teach your kids how to write birthday cards and thank you cards.  This skill helps them express their emotions towards a loved one or articulate gratitude.  It is a great habit beyond the merits of enriching their writing abilities.  Additionally, it is a wonderful opportunity for your kids to get creative and decorate the card.
  5. On the subject of art making, when children create images or sculptures, help them to write out captions or stories that explain their ideas.
  6. Even something as simple as asking for help drafting a grocery list on your phone can be a method of working on writing.  Autocorrect allows them to learn the right spelling without parents having to identify mistakes, and corresponding emojis can make this chore a little more fun.
  7. Surround your child with interesting and engaging books.  Make sure he or she has lots of age-appropriate reading material.  Embrace apps such as Kindle or Libby to read on tablets or other devices.  Take your kids to the library and download whatever apps your local library has so they can access new material and check out books virtually.  Besides incorporating technology, which is appealing to many kids, books are automatically returned on their due date.  This means no more hunting down missing books or being charged late fees!
  8. Talk about books or articles together.  It is a crucial verbal component that helps children develop and articulate their ideas.
  9. When you are working with your child, keep the feedback light and positive.  If he or she perceives writing as an opportunity to be corrected or reprimanded over and over, naturally the idea will be less appealing than if you take an encouraging, strengths-based approach.  Look for progress, not perfection.
  10. Make it fun and relevant to your child!  Tie writing back to your child’s interests and you will be on your way to enriching your kids‘ writing skills from the start.

1-on-1 Study Skills Workshop

February 1st, 2018

If you need help with organization, creating and following a subject specific study plan, and overall learning how to be an effective student on test day, then maybe a 1-on-1 Study Skills Workshop is right for you.   Sometimes, the hardest part of school is the balancing act of it all. Middle schoolers have the bar set higher than ever before, with teachers’ expectations beginning to climb as the students prepare for high school. High schoolers face even more responsibilities, scrambling to juggle multiple AP classes with extracurriculars and applying to colleges all at once. Therefore, while students can have great academic potential, if they are unable to plan out their time properly or have poor study habits, they may fall short of their academic goals.

1-on-1 Study skills workshop

If you are looking for help with getting organized and improving your study habits, look no further than the Study Hut’s 1-on-1 Study Skills workshop. These workshops are one-on-one sessions with one of our 1-on-1 Study Skills Workshop tutors who have been trained to help students reach their full academic potential. We teach students how to properly schedule out their time and approach their studying so that they can stay on top of balancing everything at once without feeling overwhelmed.

The key to good study habits begins with good organizational skills, so we help students clean up their overflowing backpacks and put everything in its place. Next, we focus on study skills specific to each student, finding areas where their note taking isn’t efficient or their flashcards aren’t doing the trick. We then work to improve these strategies, providing options so that the students can find what works best for them and get the most out of their studying.

Regardless of grade level, every student has had to deal with the stresses that come with being in upwards of seven classes at once. Study Hut’s Study Skills tutoring can help students manage their packed schedules and find ways to improve their study habits so that their academic performance can reflect their true potential.

El Segundo High School Finals Tutoring

January 29th, 2018

El Segundo High School Finals tutoring is hot on everyone’s mind.  In what seems like a blur, the holidays are gone and the new year is off and running, straight into the finish line of semester one for our El Segundo School District students. High schoolers and middle schoolers will complete their final exams, papers, and projects this week, sealing their grades for the first half of the academic year 2017-2018. Here at Study Hut, we have been working hard to help our students prepare to perform their best on their final exams, and are keeping the pedal down through the home stretch!

El Segundo High School Finals Tutoring

In addition to signing up our students for El Segundo High School finals tutoring at Study Hut Tutoring, we had the opportunity last week to get onto the El Segundo High School campus to provide complimentary final exam tutoring for those students who chose to take advantage of the opportunity. We worked with about 100 students in subjects ranging from Algebra 1 & 2 , Geometry, Statistics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, to Spanish, English, Psychology, and History. We had a strong team of tutors on hand for four hours on Friday, eagerly answering questions, providing detailed conceptual breakdowns, evaluating practice problems, and otherwise supporting the ambitious students as they worked to gain academic momentum during their approach to final exams. What a pleasure it is to be welcomed onto the campus to provide this service, and to engage with students as they look to confidently enter final exams.

We will be busy this week working with our students until 10pm nightly. Final exams can be daunting to downright overwhelming, and Study Hut tutors are here to make this mountain into a molehill. With an appropriate and strategic approach, high-performing students know that final exams offer a time not only to be challenged, but to showcase the hard work and preparation that has defined the days and weeks leading to now.

West Torrance High School Finals Cram Session

January 25th, 2018

What a wonderful year it was for the West Torrance High School Finals Cram Session in the library this year.  Tension and angst run higher than usual amongst West Torrance High School students this week, predictably of course.  The stress of Finals week finds a way to creep into almost every high school campus in California, and Torrance Unified School District students are not immune to the phenomenon.  That is why Study Hut once again partnered with West Torrance High School over the weekend and sponsored a massive, two-day, Finals cram session.  The event was a huge success, attracting over 200 students and more than 20 Study Hut tutors over the course of the two-day event.  According to one Study Hut geometry tutor, JP Birk, “This was the most successful Finals cram session event that we have held at West to date.  I have never seen such an eager group of students; these young men and women were prepared in advance with notes, previous tests and quizzes, and study guides.”

West Torrance High School Finals Cram session

Finals tutoring at the West Torrance High School Finals Cram session is nothing new for Study Hut.  We have sponsored and supported the event for over five years, providing study support twice each year as students gear up for their most heavily-weighted, comprehensive exams.  Although tutoring is provided in all subject areas, the most popular, in-need subject areas are typically geometry, chemistry, biology, algebra, and Spanish.

This year, the biology tutoring table had the best energy, by far.  Students were eagerly taking notes and asking questions about ecosystems, parts of the cell, and other foundational components of the study of life.  Although biology is always a tough class, and students have always sought a tutor for the subject, the demand for biology tutoring has still been on the rise this year, so the idea that West Torrance students are mirroring that trend is no surprise.  Regardless of the surge in biology tutoring interest, the Finals cram session still went off without a hitch, and many students got a huge advantage on this week’s exams.

While whale-watching season is nearly year-round, it is gray whale season here in Newport Beach and our Newport Beach Marine Science tutoring clients should be on the lookout. Our marine science tutors are certainly on high alert as pods of gray whales migrate south along the coast to warmer waters. With environmentalism becoming a college major of increasing interest for college students, high school students are enrolling in marine science courses to satisfy their curiosity in the growing field of environmental science. There has been a recent influx in the number of students enrolling in marine science at Newport Harbor High School, and our knowledgeable marine science tutors have been happy to assist these students. One of our Newport Beach students is working on a project tracking the migration patterns of gray whales throughout the year. With the help of his marine science tutor, he has been able to successfully complete his project and prepare for his presentation in front of the class. The student has become so interested in marine science that he has gone whale-watching to see his studies in action.

The cleanliness of our oceans has become such a popular concern that students are participating in beach cleanups, led by the Surfrider Foundation Newport Beach chapter. Volunteering is a great way to help the community and enhance your college application. There are many opportunities for students to become involved in improving our marine life. Students can get involved with the Surfrider Foundation youth leadership clubs at Newport Harbor High School and Corona Del Mar High School. Members participate in exciting activities such as spreading awareness in the community about environmental concerns and collecting water samples to test the levels of various bacteria in our water sources.
