Summer Fun!

August 2nd, 2013

Summer School is ending… our SAT courses are underway and Fall is right around the corner!

Many of the summer school classes ended this week and we have had a lot of students coming to the Study Hut for help through their classes. Geometry, spanish and government were three classes that many students were taking over the summer.

We have an SAT class going on at both our Manhattan and Redondo Beach locations. After the first 2 weeks, the students in Redondo went up an average of 100 points on their exams.

Many students have been starting SAT training so they do well on the SAT exams coming up in the fall. We have many families who are purchasing packages.

Remember, we have a 24 (12 – 2 hour) sessions, 32 hour (16 – 2 hour) sessions, and a 40 (20 – 2 hour) sessions packages!

We also offer ACT Packages as well if you are interested!

We have a free diagnostic test for the ACT and SAT coming up this Saturday – August 3rd, and another one coming up in 2 weeks on August 17th!!

With Fall right around the corner, students are calling in to reserve times and dates for the fall to come into the Study Hut. We have created a list and it’s first come/first serve.

We have also been really successful this summer with our reading/writing/math students who are in elementary and middle school that are preparing for their coming school year.

Contact us if you would like to know anymore information about any of these topics listed above.

Summer traveling plans!!

July 23rd, 2013

“Summertime,

And the livin’ is easy
Fish are jumpin’
And the cotton is high

Your daddy’s rich
And your mamma’s good lookin’
So hush little baby
Don’t you cry”

We all know the famous song about Summertime! For many of our tutors, summertime is a relaxing few months and gives many of our tutors time to travel and plan fun trips to new places. Many of our girl tutors planned a fun camping weekend in Big Bear and had a great time out in the wilderness.

Our office managers and assistant managers including Co-Owners Rob and SP, MB Office Manager Sam, MB Assistant Manager Kristen, El Segundo Office Manager Adam, RB Office Manager Justin and RB Assistant Manager Tara took a rode trip to the Green River in Utah and canoed for 3 days and over 80 miles down the river. They came back with sunburns and many of them in pain – but also with unforgettable stories and great bonding moments.

One of our tutors went to Europe for a month and a half to backpack through the European Union from the beginning of June until the middle of July.

Other trips included places like Hawaii, San Francisco, music festivals, Mexico, Nashville, and many more.

We are gearing up for Fall and keeping a list of students who want certain days and times during the fall semester – so let us know if you want to be added to our list.

As August slowly approaches, we are getting ready to say goodbye to some of our amazing co-workers here at the Study Hut.

Our MB Office Manager Sam – who has worked at the Study Hut since the beginning – is leaving for Grad School in Nashville soon .

Our El Segundo Office Manager Adam is leaving soon for Texas and our RB Assistant Manager Tara is leaving for Grad School in Northern California soon as well.

We are sad to see them leave, but they are a huge part of our Study Hut family.

Geometry success over the summer!

July 9th, 2013

You might think that Study Hut during the summer would be a desolate place. This notion couldn’t be farther from the truth. While some students head to the beach or to a summer job, many are actually getting ahead by taking geometry over the summer.

Every day, we have geometry students at The Hut cramming their brains with theorems, postulates, and angle relationships. Mr. Hughes is teaching geometry this summer at Mira Costa and his class definitely moves a fast pace. Both our students and tutors can attest to this! The key to staying afloat in geometry over the summer and landing a decent grade is, first, knowing what to practice, and second, actually practicing again and again. Doing more math problems after five grueling hours of class may seem tedious, but our experience as tutors and more importantly, as students, has showed us that this approach leads to success.

It can be overwhelming to decipher what’s important in geometry and what types of problems to practice. This is where Study Hut can help. Not only do our tutors know the geometry course at Mira Costa better than the back their hands, they can also assess your strengths and weaknesses. At Study Hut, we will keep you organized to use your precious time efficiently. In an accelerated summer geometry course, nothing is more important than time management to prevent you from falling behind.

Here are three tips for success in geometry over the summer:

1)      Try your best to pay attention in class. Five hours of class is a long time, but you will be in much better shape if you take an interest in the subject and will spend less time at home trying to figure out what the heck you were supposed to learn that day.

2)      It is not unusual for a student to occasionally feel overwhelmed and lost in geometry. Trust us, you are not alone! Get help from an experienced tutor at Study Hut. Often times, a second explanation or a different approach will turn a few light bulbs on.

3)      Know your postulates and theorems! In order to do proofs, you need to know and understand all of the postulates and theorems in your book. You will commit these to memory more easily by making an ongoing list of postulates and theorems as you learn each chapter. Put this list in front of you every time you do your homework. If you do this, these fundamental concepts will begin to take root in your brain and you will not have to shuffle through your book.

Summer kick off!

June 28th, 2013

We have had a great start to summer tutoring! This week all our managers were out of the office for a Canoe trip down the Green River in Utah… but our tutors were in the office working hard and getting a lot done! Our managers go on a trip for a week once a year, and they canoed 70 miles down the river! What a huge success that is!

We had many new students this week and we are super excited for what the summer’s going to bring! We had many younger students in here getting prepared for their next school year. We are open all summer.. Monday through Friday 10am until 8pm!

Yesterday (Thursday) was a big day for us! We were preparing a lot of students for Mr. Hughes Geometry Summer School test today and for the Modern World History exam as well !

We have been focusing with the younger students on mainly reading, writing, and reading comprehension. It has been getting a slow start, but it will definitely pick up after July 4th!

We have a lot of great summer camps coming up starting July 8th and 9th! We have a new summer course that we are offering in the summer for Freshman that will be Sophomores in the fall. It is a Pre-SAT course that costs $650 and will be Tuesdays and Thursday from 6-8pm. It starts July 9th and ends August 15th (so a 6 week course). If you are interested – you can come in for an SAT Diagnostic test. The Diagnostic test will take an hour and forty minutes. You will complete 4 (25 minute sections) taken from past CollegeBoard SAT tests!

If you are interested you can contact Samantha@studyhut.com or rob@studyhut.com. You can also call our MB or RB office: (310)5462408 (MB) or RB: (310)540-5888

We are also offering a lot of SAT/ACT/ and HSPT Diagnostic tests coming up! We have one tomorrow – Satuday July 28th, Saturday July 6th, and Saturday July 20th! Let us know if you want to sign up! They are free and go from 8am to 12noon!

Study Hut Bonding Nights

June 14th, 2013

The Study Hut is having a bonding night tonight and we can’t wait! We have decided to take a trip to Hollywood together so we can hang out and relax outside of work!

Our tutors always plan fun days and events for the rest of our tutors to participate in! On Thursdays, we always enjoy going to Trivia Night on Thursdays at Hennesseys in Manhattan Beach to have dinner and test our knowledge!!

Tonight we will be caravaning to Hollywood to hang out on the town and have a lot of fun!!

On June 20th, we will be having our end of the year party since school is out and summer is upon us! We want to celebrate each other’s achievements and have a celebration with all our offices for the end of a great year!!

For our end of the year party, we are going to put on our own mini Scholar Quiz – and see who comes out as the winner on top!

Many of our tutors are going on to grad school or going on to other jobs for the summer! We will be sad to see them go – but know that they will do great in the future!

Many other fun events that we have done this semester include:

Rock climbing, camping, road tripping, trivia nights, barbeques, kick backs, fun dinners or lunches, trips to Hollywood, Salsa Dancing, Scuba Diving and many more!

We not only work together but we all friends outside of work as well!! Even though some of us live farther than others, we try our best to get together and hang out outside of work!

So for the end of the year.. for those leaving (tutors and students going off to college): Goodbye and goodluck! We will miss you! Stay in touch and come back in visit! Don’t be strangers!

Scholar Quiz 2013 – Blog part 1

We had a great turnout at our first ever Study Hut Foundation Parent/Teacher Scholar Quiz on Sunday June 2nd at the Manhattan Beach Country Club!

We had 16 teams participate at our event, and the event lasted from 4pm until 8pm. The winning team’s name was WB and the Funky 3.

The teams were parents and teachers from all the surrounding areas including Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, and Hermosa Beach. Many teachers from the schools participated including: Palos Verdes, West High School, Manhattan Beach Middle School, and Mira Costa High School.

The questions that were asked ranged from all different subjects, including English, History, Geography, Pop Culture, Math and many more!

We had a silent auction as well which included restaurant certificates, jewelry, signed memorabilia from the Kings Hockey Team, cupcakes from Susie Cakes, and many more.

Many local merchants donated silent auction iteams, including but not limited to wine, plants, hair appointments, free tutoring sessions, and music lessons.

We also had raffle tickets that we sold ($5 for 1 or $20 for 5 tickets). The people who won, received a trip for 2 nights (air fare not included) – and they can pick from over 50 different destinations.

We served Hors d’œuvres while the event was going on including but not limited too: Quiche and dumplings – and we also had a cash bar outside that overlooked the tennis courts.

If you would like to donate to the Study Hut Foundation, you can log on to our website at StudyHutFoundation.org and click “Donate”

As of right now we have 13 students that attend the Study Hut Foundation and next year we are hoping to bump it up to 50 students. We are seeing improvements already in their grades and have changed the way that the students view going to school.

Thanks to all the teams that participated! Congrats to the winners! Thanks again to everyone that came out and supported our event! We really appreciate it!

Stay tuned for Part 2 and more pictures in the next blog!

The beginning of the end…

June 1st, 2013

 The Beginning of the End

We’ve all heard the expression and sang the song, School’s out for summer by the one and only Alice Cooper… but for many, it’s the beginning of the end!! As we say, “So close, yet so far”

AP’s have past and finals are quickly approaching… and SAT’s are tomorrow!!

For those that are on the cusp of a letter grade, focus hard and makes sure to get that grade up! If you’re at a 79.8, 79.9,80.0, 89.8, 89.9…. you want to make sure to pull those grades up!!

If you are in the middle of a grade… it will be harder to move your grade to the next letter grade.

What else can you focus on? Well for those taking the SAT, here are some good tips to remember:

– Make sure to read the question and making yourself read like a 2nd grade.  Put your finger under every word in the directions (if you tend to make mistakes by not reading the question).

– Lookout for extreme answer choices in the Critical Reading section! If the answer choice contains strong words like ‘never, always, must, impossible, cannot, only, all, none, etc,’ then it is likely incorrect.

-Maintain a healthy low sugar diet high in vitamins and other essential nutrient, it will increase your ability to focus and is good for you anyway!
– Ample sleep is crucial just like any other test!
– Do your best not to stress out, cortisol is a hormone released when you stress, and while its effects may help save you from a bear attack, the effects of cortisol are no good for test taking! Stay positive!
-Consistent studying is very important, cramming Is stressful and not too successful!
-Try to have a good understanding of the direction of how to take the test before you go in so you don’t have to waste time reading directions! Every second is important.
