El Segundo: New Location!

May 8th, 2016

We’ve moved! We couldn’t be more thrilled to officially announce our new address at 529 Main Street. We are happy to sit on the cozy corner of Main Street and Imperial. We are surrounded by other great El Segundo businesses and restaurants, and we are excited to get to know our neighbors.

Our new location is within walking distance of El Segundo High School, so our students can easily mosey down Main Street and grab a bite to eat before coming to their appointments at the Hut. This makes it more convenient than ever for our ESHS students to get homework help, study for that big test, or prepare for the SAT/ACT, especially for our students who aren’t driving yet.

In addition, our new location is bigger! The newly improved Hut can accommodate twice as many desks, meaning students have more access to the wonderful El Segudno staff. With more room for whiteboards, more room for computers, and more room for snacks, the new Hut is better than ever.

Our new location is also easy to spot. It is literally a Hut on stilts! Just look for our signs in the window! Our stilted hut looks over the park across the street and has parking accessible below the building. So our students who do drive, have an easy place to park their cars. Even though our address has changed, our services have not. We still offer all of the Study Hut classics; like K-12 subject tutoring, ACT and SAT prep, private school entrance exam help, college admission counseling, and free diagnostic exams and consultations. Our same great El Segundo branch’s staff of tutors will be there and maybe even a few new ones. We are excited to have a bigger and more convenient space to help our El Segundo students succeed. Come down and check it out. Better yet, give us a call and get started today!

Answer:

All of the above!

Manhattan Beach Study Hut Essay Writing

Manhattan Beach Study Hut can help you at any time with your essay writing, for any reason. Not everyone is born a great writer, and even if you were, there is always room for improvement. Already have sweet writing skills? We knew people in college who STILL couldn’t figure out how to structure their bibliography in the proper format—even if their ideas in the essay were beautiful, those citation errors would cost them a whole letter grade. P.S. If you don’t know what a bibliography is, you might want to stop by Manhattan Beach Study Hut for a citation refresher session! Teachers are picky with that stuff.

Anyway, oftentimes you have all these ideas in your head and just need someone to help get yourself started. A Manhattan Beach Study Hut Essay Writing tutor (say that five times fast) will ask you for a quick rundown of your teacher’s grading style, your prompt, your class, your history with essays—anything to help us get a handle on your needs. Once we understand how your final draft should look, we’ll make a game plan for you to get there.

No matter how much we get done within the session, we want you to be able to leave knowing how to finish your essay. One of the most useful tools a Study Hut tutor offers in essay writing is the construction of an outline. An outline may look like more work, but it makes the writing process infinitely easier. It organizes your topics, ideas, and evidence, at the same time providing a checklist to make ensure you met the assignment requirements. Completing the checklist equals full point and maybe even getting on your English teacher’s good side. Did I hear college recommendation? No? Just me, I guess.

Early College High School

April 19th, 2016

Students in Newport Mesa Unified School District are starting to look more and more for alternatives to Corona del Mar High School and Newport Harbor High School, despite ever-increasing API scores and the district’s surging popularity. While both CDM and Newport Harbor are great schools by almost any objective standard, Newport Mesa USD is now offering a smaller alternative called Early College High School (ECHS). Early College High School is a public high school within the Newport Mesa district, however it is much smaller, operating at a maximum of 400 students. This allows students to take college-level courses and earn college credits while still in high school in a much more intimate environment. Students can earn up to a full year of college credit depending on their choice of classes due to their partnership with Coastline Community College. Because of this partnership, Newport Beach students are able to earn free college credit while still getting their high school diploma.

Due to the small class sizes at Early College High School, they are able to provide a family-like environment. This includes access to college and high school counselors. They also foster this “family” like atmosphere with campus-wide competitions and events. This family, however, is focused on preparing for and attending college. With a 100% graduation rate and top API scores, Early College High School has a lot to offer Newport Beach students. The OC Register rated Early College High School one of the Top Ten schools in Orange County for the past three years in a row. Early College High School can serve as a great opportunity for driven students who are looking for a smaller learning environment that can support their goals.

French Tutoring in the South Bay? Oui!

April 12th, 2016

French Tutoring in the South Bay

Most of us French-speakers at Study Hut grew up in California. We know what it’s like to leave the classroom and have no one to practice with to improve our French speaking skills. After all, Spanish is the second-most spoken language in California, not French. Canada is just a little out of reach for your average middle or high school student. That’s why Manhattan Beach is especially lucky to have Study Hut, a center of French tutoring in the South Bay, as a place to hone your students’ French accent and get them on the fast track to bilingual heaven.

Study Hut offers French tutoring with tutors who have years of French under their belt. We know how tricky learning a second language can be! Que, qui, quelle, quoi? What? We have navigated through the commonly confused words, verbs, and phrases. We’ve even gone through the frustration of having a total disconnect with a teacher. Whether you need help learning gender, verbs, or just want someone with whom you can practice conversational French, your Study Hut French tutor can help. We will sit down, feel out your student’s specific needs, and get to work. We know a solid foundation is key to future success in the language, and we will work towards that base.

You may be lamenting the fact that they chose not-so-practical-in-CA-French for their language in school, but don’t worry! Learning any second language is a great opportunity for your child. Many majors in college today require language proficiency, and even basic proficiency gives an edge in the professional world.

Armed with advanced degrees in math and engineering, tutors like ours at Study Hut are not only qualified, but also fully dedicated to the success of our students. Besides having extensive tutoring experience, our tutors are local. This means that they went to the same schools as their students and even had the same teachers. If you want someone to give you the inside scoop on how to succeed in “the hard teacher’s” algebra class, Study Hut can help out.

Manhattan Beach Algebra Tutoring

All algebra students are paired with the best tutor for the student’s needs and preferences. All sessions include study skills and organization help and a short generic academic check-up. From there, we move on to the math. Whether it’s review, answering questions on difficult topics, or studying for a test, our one-on-one sessions are always productive. We also don’t just stress doing the algebra correctly; we really want to make sure the student understands the concepts. Short review quizzes at the end of sessions are common. If we notice any kind of red flag, we immediately get in touch with parents to devise a plan of attack. Algebra, brace yourself!

At Study Hut, we know that potential new students and their parents often have questions before starting Manhattan Beach algebra tutoring. That’s why all are welcome to schedule a free consultation with an experienced Study Hut manager. In the meantime, take a second to fill out the contact form on this page. We’d love to hear from you!

Manhattan Beach Chemistry Tutors’ Take: The Struggle of Stoichiometry

April 3rd, 2016

The Struggle of Stoichiometry

We get it! This stuff is tricky. Our Manhattan Beach Chemistry Tutors have created a great outline to help assist you with all of your stoichiometry needs. Take your time and follow our step-by-step guide to solving a stoichiometry problem. Here we go!

Think of these problems as a recipe. If a cake recipe calls for 2 cups of sugar and 2 cups of flour to make 1 cake, how many cups of sugar and flour do we need for 5 cakes? This is stoichiometry. The sugar and flour are our reactants and the cake is our product. Also- we need to measure sugar and flour in a universal unit in order to compare. We don’t measure them in weight because or number of particles, because these can vary based on the size of the sugar and flour particles. Instead, we measure them in something universally recognized and standardized: the cup. In stoichiometry, we use the universal unit called a mole (6.022 x 1023 atoms/particles). We use moles when comparing molecules.

Let’s try a problem!

  1. Write out your reaction. Be sure to pay close attention to your charges. Keep a polyatomic ion chart handy for this. Remember, cations come first, anions come second.
  2. Balance your equations. Save Oxygen for second to last and Hydrogen for last. This will save you a lot of time.
  3. Understand what the question is asking. Am I given grams? Am I given moles? Are they asking me to answer in moles, grams, or particles/molecules?
  4. Write the given amount under your ion/compound and draw an arrow to the ion/compound they want you to answer with.
  5. Set up your problem. Remember to use your mole-to-mole ratio. Those coefficients are there for a reason!
  6. Answer in the correct number of significant figures and box your answer.
  7.  Double-check your work. Did you answer the original question?

Great job! You’re a stoichiometry master. If you’re still confused, come see one of our Manhattan Beach Chemistry tutors today!
