Use Your Break Wisely!

December 13th, 2015

Oh the weather outside is frightful

Use Your Winter Break Wisely!

Ok the weather is pretty nice…blue skies for days…Ahhhh. Winter Break! A time to relax, eat, hang out with family, and celebrate. You should definitely do all of those things… (here comes a but)…(drumroll please)…

BUT

You should ALSO use your break wisely! Open that backpack and do some studying over Winter Break. It’s been a long, hard semester, and you do not want to spoil all that you have put into it by slacking right before finals. With the biggest test of the semester right around the corner, many of you already have a study guide or an idea of what your final will look like. Use that!

You can start making flashcards for vocab. That’s something you can do with Mariah Carey belting out “All I Want for Christmas…is an A!” and it’s been proven that listening to music while studying can improve your performance on the test!

You should make a detailed outline with flow charts, timelines and pretty colors. This will refresh your memory of the topics and provide a beautiful study guide you can use once finals week arrives.

Grab your old tests or practice tests, and retake them, checking your answers as you go. This will help you decide where you need to allocate the most time for studying, and where you can skim a bit because you already have a good handle on the material.

DO NOT simply run your eyes over every single chapter in the book, or every single page of notes you’ve written. This is a waste of your time. Rereading is a passive activity, plus it is much too general. With so much material to cover, you are better off zeroing in on what’s important (hint: what’s on the study guide or what was on old tests).
Have fun over break, but spending the entire two weeks binge-watching Parks and Rec for the 3rd time will come back to haunt you when finals week arrives! Put in a few hours over break and I promise you’ll thank yourself later!

El Segundo ACT Tutoring

December 8th, 2015

With the upcoming ACT test, it’s a good time to start studying! The ACT is an overarching and comprehensive exam that often requires a more tailored approach to studying. Sometimes, going through the review book on your own is just not cutting it. If this describes you, look no further than El Segundo Study Hut! We have several different ACT packages to suit any student’s needs.

El Segundo ACT Tutoring

El Segundo ACT tutoring offers tutoring packed with beneficial study material and highly experienced and qualified tutors. Every package comes with at least 3 proctored practice tests. However, each package varies depending on how many total hours of work as well as preference for one-on-one or small group tutoring. Furthermore, it comes with customized homework for the student to complete in order to reinforce study material. Through this catered package, any problem areas can be assessed quickly and efficiently in order for the student to solidify outstanding ACT scores. Also, students will be given online video solutions for independent study (great for visual learners!). Beyond the supplemental material, El Segundo ACT tutoring employs passionate and knowledgeable tutors who aim to help your child boost his or her ACT scores. Any problems your child may face with the ACT can be solved by our exceptional staff.

Before we can accommodate your child’s needs, just bring them in to take an ACT diagnostic test. Using detailed analytics, we will promptly create a package geared toward fortifying your child’s area of weakness in order to get the best results as efficiently as possible.

The Twelve Days of Mathmas: Twelve Ways to Improve Your Math Grade

December 6th, 2015

At Study Hut, our local experts will help you improve your grades as well as your study habits. Here are tips from a El Segundo Math Tutor to improve your math grade.

  1. Do the homework carefully
Homework is an excuse to get really good at the work before you’re tested on it. If you rush through it, you’re wasting your time! Work through each problem carefully and check the answers to make sure you know what’s what.
  2. Do extra problems
If you’re only assigned the odds, do the evens! This will save you from cramming and/or bombing the test.
  3. Write down the ‘warm up’ or ‘practice’ problems your teacher puts on the board
If you’re teacher takes the time to go through it, this problem or something like it will probably appear on the test!
  4. Write out the steps to a problem: “Teach the Alien” Style
This means you should explain each step in excruciating detail-as if you were teaching an creature from another planet who has never heard of geometry.
  5. Teach your mom how to do a particularly tough problem
It is scientifically proven that the best way to learn something is to teach it. This is called the protégé effect.
  6. Color code your notes
For example, highlight the change in each step!
  7. Make a cheat sheet-and COLOR CODE it (even if you don’t get to use it on the test)
This is a great way to review and identify the key concepts.
  8. Complete the study guide at least two days before the test
This way if you’re confused, you have time to figure it out!
  9. Keep those cheat sheets and study guides
They will be your main study material for the final!
  10. Study your old quizzes and tests
Do this both for the practice problems and to figure out what type of questions your teacher uses: are they straight from the book? are they from the homework? were they done in class?
  11. Ask for help
If you aren’t sure how to do it or only kind of understand, go to your teacher before or after school (added bonus: the face time shows that you’re putting in extra effort, which never hurts.)
  12. Come to Study Hut!
Our college-educated tutors are well versed in all levels of math, from Pre-Algebra to AP Calculus. If you’re having trouble, a one-on-one session tailored to your needs with an attentive tutor could be the key to improve your math grade.

El Segundo Chemistry Tutors Love Bond(s)

November 22nd, 2015

The name’s bond, ionic bond.

El Segundo Chemistry tutors-bond

In the spirit of the latest 007 movie, Study Hut wants to talk about bonds. El Segundo Chemistry tutors have been talking bonds a lot lately with their chemistry students. In chemistry, there are two main types of bonds that you will run into (none of them named James!) and they are very different!

Covalent bonds

  1. Share the desired electron(s)-This means that the electron spends its time in the shells of both atoms in the bond

  1. This sharing can be equal (nonpolar)….

  1. or unequal (polar)…

If one atom has a stronger electronegativity (like attractiveness to an electron) then the shared electron will spend more time with that atom than the other, giving it a slightly negative charge and leaving the other one with a slightly positive charge.

  1. Occur between two nonmetals

Ionic bonds

  1. Steal the desired electron(s)-In this type of bond, the electron is not passed back and forth like a tennis ball. In this type of bond, one atom plucks the electron right out of the other atom’s valence shell and takes it for itself. Now one atom has an extra electron (now it has more electrons than protons so it has a NEGATIVE charge) and the other atom is short an electron (now it has less electrons than protons so it has a POSITIVE charge). Well these two differently charged atoms are attracted to each other and so they hang out together.

El Segundo Chemistry Tutors - ionic

  1. Occur between a nonmetal and a metal.
This is because nonmetals have almost full valence shells (their p shell’s are so close to full!!) and metals have almost empty valence shells, so metals gladly give their valence electrons to the desperate nonmetals giving everyone an even 8 valence electrons.

For more on bonds and other chemistry help, come on in to El Segundo Study Hut right behind Starbucks. We’ve got plenty of El Segundo Chemistry tutors who would love to translate chemistry into a language that makes sense to you. Our one-on-one sessions guarantee that you will get the support you need to prepare for that test, bring up that grade, and pass that class!

Excellent Playa del Rey Tutoring Option

November 17th, 2015

It has come as a slight surprise how many new students have been coming to Study Hut from Playa del Rey and Westchester for tutoring over the last year, and we’ve had an even more noticeable influx in September and October than in the past. For residents, the fact that new community members are searching for “Playa del Rey Tutoring” or “Math tutor in Playa del Rey” is probably an excellent sign, both for property values and overall neighborhood prosperity. But is also means that more and more families are seeking to enrich their children’s understanding of academic concepts outside of school, which should have a solid effect in the classroom as well. While many of our students that come to Study Hut for tutoring from Playa del Rey and Westchester go to St. Bernard High School and Westchester High School, others go to Loyola High School, Harvard-Westlake, and a variety of other local private high schools.

At Study Hut, we know the Playa del Rey tutoring options better than most, as many of the tutors on our team enjoy living in the quaint beach town. Although parents might luck into a flier for a local high school student who is looking to make a few bucks tutoring on the side after school, the options are generally very limited, and parents often find out fast that local college students are not the most reliable, even if they do make for affordable, flexible tutors. Typically, the hassle is not worth the effort, and that is the story we continue to hear from the parents of our current students. Whether families are looking for a chemistry tutor, a math tutor, ACT tutoring, or some other subject tutoring, Study Hut Tutoring in El Segundo is extremely convenient for Playa del Rey and Westchester families seeking a cool, relaxing tutoring facility with smart, young, energetic tutors.

Summer in El Segundo: Tutoring

June 23rd, 2015

As summer in El Segundo arrives and the school year comes to an end, Study Hut is relishing the achievements of our students and looking forward to summertime and the next school year. The 2014-2015 academic year has been exciting and enjoyable for Study Hut, El Segundo. We take great pride in seeing the growth and progress of our students as they strive to reach their academic goals, and we put forth our best effort to assist them every step of the way.

This school year we served local El Segundo School District students from El Segundo High School, El Segundo Middle School, Center Street School, and Richmond Street School. We also had the privilege of working with students from the surrounding districts of LAUSD, MBUSD, and RBUSD, coming from Mira Costa High, Redondo Union High, Reseda High, Manhattan Beach Middle School, and Parras Middle School. Additionally, we had some wonderful students from the local private schools Vistamar, St. John Bosco, Bishop Montgomery, Loyola, and Chadwick.

Working with such a wide variety of students and school districts has been a wonderful way for us to grow as a service: broadening our knowledge of varying curriculums and school expectations. Whether we were working with a 3rd grader on Common Core math enrichment and reading comprehension, or helping a high school Junior succeed in challenging Spanish and calculus classes, we have been able to exceed expectations and propel students to new heights in their personal academic success. We also enjoyed working with El Segundo High this school year by administering, proctoring, and reviewing full-length practice SATs and ACTs for our local students, creating a valuable resource to them as they strive to achieve their best result on these crucial tests. Now that summer in El Segundo has arrived, we are enjoying a brief respite from the rigours of the academic year, and refocusing our energy to best assist our summer students.

We will continue to work with students through the summer in El Segundo, concentrating on varying areas determined by student need. The waning obligations of summertime offers a great opportunity for students to get a head start on upcoming classes with one-on-one tutoring. Our summer students will be introduced to forthcoming concepts, solidify fundamentals while enriching current understanding, and/or undertake a test preparation program to improve on the SAT and/or ACT. For our incoming Seniors, summer is a great time to make the final push for a solid SAT/ACT score in the fall, and to begin working with a tutor to develop a plan of attack for college applications and their entailing essays and personal statements. Regardless of the specific focus, summer tutoring is an excellent way for students to stay engaged and enter the upcoming school year with a smooth transition to more advanced coursework.

We look forward to continuing to serve El Segundo and the surrounding communities through the summer and next school year. Check out the Hut!

Summer math update

July 31st, 2012

Summer is halfway through, has your brain turned to mush? Are you forgetting how to
do basic math? This is normal when you aren’t using your brain like you do during the
school year. Just like any other muscle, your brain needs regular exercise to stay fit!

While taking a rest once in a while to recharge is important, it’s also important to
keep your mental fitness during the summer so you are ready to tackle school come
September. A great way to do this is to work on subjects you struggled with in the
previous year to stay caught up, or start learning material in advance so you don’t feel like
you’ve been thrown in the deep end of the pool once school starts up again.

While things are quieter at the Study Hut during the summer, we still have great tutors
here ready to help out with any and all subjects you may need help with this summer.
Math tripping you up? Spanish giving you dolor de cabeza? Chemistry confusing you?
Think of the Study Hut as summer camp for your brain!

Enjoy your summer!

New tiki Hut puts a twist on outside tutoring

July 23rd, 2012

Need to get some schoolwork done but don’t want to sit inside? Well The Study Hut in El Segundo has something new and it’s very exciting! What is it you ask? A TIKI HUT! The Tiki Hut was hand built by SP, Justin, Taylor, Adam, and Sam.  It’s located on the North Patio of the Hut and is a perfect studying atmosphere for the students! For those that enjoy being outdoors, the hut is a great opportunity to enjoy being outside and still getting that wonderful beachy feel. The students at the El Segundo Study Hut are truly enjoying this one of a kind creation. The Tiki Hut is also a great place for students to take a break from their work and be able to hang out with the other students. When you enter the Tiki Hut, you can feel the tropics at your fingertips. Having the Hut on El Segundo’s Patio is like taking a mini vacation on a regular old study break. This new addition was lit up last weekend with tiki torches and and welcomed with a limbo contest. If you have not had the chance to see the Tiki Hut, you can’t miss it. This creation was a perfect match for the El Segundo Study Hut and truly gives it that relaxing tropical feeling. The Tiki Hut is a positive impact for the Study Hut and hopefully is around for a long time.
