The beginning of a school year can come with many exciting twists and turns. From seeing old friends, to meeting different teachers and immersing oneself in a new world, each year comes with a hand full of differences. For the most part these new aspects of life aren’t very different or difficult, in fact most are pretty exhilarating. However one area which each year comes with added difficulty for most students is math. Whether it’s geometry, algebra, or even algebra 2, each new math comes with it’s own twists, turns, and potentially difficult new material. It is imperative that most students hit the ground running in math classes because the pace at which they move only speeds up, and if someone get’s lost early on, it’s very difficult to catch up as the material adds upon itself.
That’s why the tutors here at the Study Hut of Manhattan Beach feel that the best way not to fall behind is to prepare for coming challenges. That’s why we are currently offering summer prep courses for algebra, geometry and algebra 2. From July 24-August 23, come in for 5 weeks, 20 hours, of tutoring. During the course students will get the opportunity to be exposed to much of the material which will be coming in the next year. As boring as math might be for many students, it is a skill which one can only improve by exposure and practice. Therefore these summer prep courses put students in the best position to excel in math, often the most difficult subject of the year. Studies have shown that prior exposure to a subject, even if it’s not memorized or fully retained, can DRAMATICALLY improve one’s performance and understanding of the material upon second exposure. So don’t delay, and put yourself or your child through one of the finest tutoring facilities in the south bay area this summer to make sure that math is a problem of the past.
Summer at The Hut
May 15th, 2012Newport Beach fired up
May 7th, 2012We have been turnin’ and burnin’ in Newport Beach. Study Hut is fast underway, and now tutoring several local students from Newport Harbor High School, Ensign Middle School, Corona del Mar High School, and a few other private schools. The buzz is spreading, and the vibe is good.
We have been getting the Hut open early and often here in Newport. We want to have the coolest tutoring facility in Orange County, and the only way to guarantee that is to put the extra time in early and often. Each morning, Rob and SP get to the shop at 6:30, get the coffee brewing, and work on painting, fielding phone calls, preparing lesson plans, and talking to other local business owners.
Study Hut Tutoring recently joined the Newport Chamber of Commerce, and Rob went to his first Chamber event on Thursday. The mixer took place at Tommy Bahama’s Grille on Avocado St. near the Bristol, and was meant to be a membership reception for new and potentially new members.
All in all, it is just really fun and exciting to be a part of this new business. I remember our first few clients in Manhattan Beach, and many of those young men and women are now finishing up college. Unbelievable!
New El Segundo up and running!
May 3rd, 2012The renovations at Study Hut Tutoring in El Segundo have been amazing. The Hut is completely transformed, and based on early polling, this is the coolest looking Hut ever! We have a full side yard, definitely big enough for the tutors’ end-of-the-year BBQ 😉
So what kind of renovations have we been doing? Everything from opening up a new lobby and expanded tutoring space in the back, to new plants, paintings, wallpaper, and more. This is going to mean more space for students and tutors to spread out, and will ultimately lead to a more intimate, productive tutoring environment.
Have you been to the best tutoring location in the South Bay? Do you need help with math tutoring, English tutoring, or perhaps another subject that has been plaguing you? Don’t let the difficult curriculum at ESHS or other local schools keep you from achieving your goals. Study Hut is hear to help!
Prep for Summer
February 28th, 2012It may seem a tad premature to write about summer programs, but here at The Study Hut we are always thinking ahead of schedule. The sunny California weather also helps put in a good summer mood. This summer we are excited to introduce new programs for all ages!
Summer is a great time to get caught up on SATs, college apps, and enrichment for the younger ones. The Manhattan and Redondo Beach Study Huts are soon to be equipped with programs for each of those areas.
For starters, we will have reading and writing programs for kindergarten through 8th grade. For the youngsters, we will have reading workshops that target phonemic awareness to prepare them for reading. 3rd-4th graders will have the opportunity to participate in fluency workshops. 5th-8th graders will have the opportunity to take a writing workshop that will be geared toward writing perfected five paragraph essays. Each student will be provided with a private tutor that will guide them toward success.
As for the students at the High School Level we will have both math prep (Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 3/4) and SAT courses. These classes will be in a group setting and will give each student a preview on each of these subjects prior to enrolling so they can have the benefit of starting out with flying colors.
Finally, we will be offering one-on-one tutoring sessions specifically geared toward helping students with their college applications. Such topics to be covered are their personal statement, financial aid, the actual application, resume, and interview skills. Summer is always a great time to get ahead of the game with college apps. Who better to help your child prepare than a tutoring center that has helped numerous students get into college?
Although we just got finished with ski week, we are geared up for the future and can’t wait to implement our new programs! Stay tuned for more info!
xoxo,
The Study Hut Team
BYU Independent Study vs. Study Hut Tutoring
February 6th, 2012What do you do if you’re a Mira Costa High School student and your finals week didn’t go like you had hoped?
If you’re a student who didn’t pass 1 or more of your classes this last semester there is still hope! Credit for classes not passed can be made up via Independent Study offered through Brigham Young University. BYU offers a wide array of high school courses that allow you to independently make up credits without falling behind. The courses consist of between 6 and 8 instructor-graded assignments (referred to as speedbacks) that are submitted either online or through the mail, as well as 2 midterms and 1 final (which must be taken at a credentialed proctoring center). Conveniently, Study hut tutoring not only offers BYU independent study tutoring but also is a BYU accredited proctoring center.
BYU Independent Study is undoubtedly a great opportunity to get a 2nd chance to make up for class with a non-passing grade. Courses are however completely independent some students find it difficult to stay on track and not fall behind. Not to mention there is very little additional instruction if a student is struggling with a particular lesson of the course.
Study hut’s wide array of friendly tutors and its BYU accredited proctoring services make it the perfect environment to help your high school student make up credits for courses with non-passing grades.
Don’t Wait ’til it’s too Late
August 18th, 2011It’s that time of year again, kids are getting ready for school. The back to school commercials are present during your favorite television shows, kids are counting down the days they have left in summer, and everyone is trying to squeeze that last minute vacation in. With all the hustle and bustle of getting ready for school, tutoring may be the last thing on a parent’s mind. What most fail to realize, is that it should be the first.
Each and every year at the Hut, without a fail, we see kids who come in after they have already received their first disappointing test grade. At this point, the student comes in and has already started digging themselves a hole. This automatically creates a negative self esteem that doesn’t set the right tone for the school year. We have found, time and time again, students and parents are happier getting their kid in here from the very start. Even starting them prior to that first day of school gets them back in the mindset. They have a chance to brush up on those skills that caused them trouble the previous year.
Our tutors are so equip with the curriculum for the Manhattan Beach School District that some of our students even have the chance look ahead and get a running start in their curriculum for the up and coming year. Even if kids do not get tutoring prior to the school year, that first week of school is an ample opportunity to get situated and come up with a game plan for the year. A good majority of our kids are in middle school and need help understanding how to prioritize their classes. A schedule with multiple teachers is a new concept. It is crucial to set up this plan in order to keep on task with each and every class. Starting at the beginning of the school year will allow for more time to study and less time figuring out how to balance multiple subjects with multiple classes. Bottom line, don’t wait for your kid to fail to start thinking about tutoring. The sooner the better.
El Segundo students on fire
August 3rd, 2011Of all of the summers I have been tutoring, this year’s crop is by far my most energetic, enthusiastic, and eager to learn and get ahead for next year.
While there are always those students that need to play a little catch up and fill in some of the holes that were created due to poor teaching or a lack of attention during school last year, this year, more than ever, I have been tutoring students who just want to get ahead. Even cooler is that most of these students are self-driven, meaning that they are signing up themselves and getting appointments adjusted on their own, rather than having mom force them to come in for some summer enrichment.
The result is that these students are getting far more out of each session than the average student. While some of these young achievers come here for tutoring from West Los Angeles schools like St. Bernard’s, Corpus Christi, Loyola High School, Notre Dame Academy, and Westchester Lutheran, more of our summer tutoring students are from El Segundo High School and El Segundo Middle School.
We have been tutoring El Segundo students in all sorts of subjects, but I have been doing mostly math tutoring, critical reading tutoring, and writing tutoring. It is definitely going to pay off for these guys come Fall.
