10 Reasons to get a tutor

1. During the school day, teachers’ attention is spread among many students. A tutor can create a targeted plan for your child’s specific needs.

 

2. Today, kids have increased access to technology, busy parents, and have extremely busy schedules, all of which can potentially distract them from their studies. Time with a tutor gives them the time to focus only on homework or studying.

 

3. Tutors have the time to explain a concept in several different ways, instead of having to move class along at a certain pace.

 

4. Tutoring can also teach study skills, which can then be applied to what’s going on in school.

 

5. Even for students who are doing well in school, tutoring can provide a competitive edge to do even better.

 

6. Summer tutoring can prepare students for upcoming difficult subjects, such as algebra, or reinforce what was already learned that year so September isn’t spent playing catch-up.

 

7. For high school students, individual or small group tutoring can be essential for APs and SAT subject tests.

 

8. For younger kids, tutoring can help boost standardized test scores.

 

9. A tutor can be a useful sounding board for an upcoming project, paper, or exam, and can help prevent the stress and frustration of leaving an assignment for the night before.

A Perfect Tutoring session

“A perfect tutoring session is a thing of beauty. There’s no formula for recreating it every time, but it happens more and more often at Study Hut these days. Tutors and tutees are in mid-season form by this time in the year – the early-semester inertia long past and the end-of-semester burnout still months away. We’ve settled into the school year, developing our own rhythms and rapports with all our Study Hut students. It’s perfect tutoring season.

No two perfect sessions look exactly the same; there are too many contributing factors to consider. Some students are panicked, struggling to finish cramming for that test they kept putting off; some students are relaxed, looking forward to another weekly session with the same tutor they’ve been working with for the past 6 months; some are on their way to SAT tutoring, dreaming of the day they will strut their stuff at college, applying all their Hut study skills to everything from Bio 101 to Shakespearean sonnets to intramural softball. Some are terrified at the mere mention of numbers, others are enthralled by the simple joys of deriving or integrating. Still others are history sponges, seeking to soak in as many dates and elections and revolutions as possible, baffled by some of their peers’ classic refrain: “Why do we have learn this? It already happened.”

This variety is what makes working at Study Hut so engaging. It is a constant process: evaluating a student’s interests and needs, weaknesses and strengths, passions and quirks. Only by getting to know each student – asking them about their day, their favorite color, and their life’s goals – can we craft these elusive perfect sessions.

As we begin to understand our tutees, we get better at tailoring our sessions to their own specific needs and goals. This is the constant process of creating perfect sessions. We may not achieve perfection every time (and some students may make it more difficult than others), but even when we fail we do pretty good job at making learning happen.”

Personalized Meetings in the Classroom

 

In the beginning of spring 2014 semester, Laura, Justin, and I had one-on-one advisement sessions with Mr. Mullen’s AVID (http://www.avid.org) class at Palos Verdes Peninsula High School (PVPHS). We split the class up into four groups & had each freshman student bring up their grades, as well as a write-up of their future goals for spring semester. The main objective of these one-on-one meetings was to assess & acknowledge the strengths and weaknesses in each individual’s academic performance, analyze certain areas in which the students needed improvement, discuss their past history of success & setbacks, visualize how they should go about working towards those improvements, and how they could tackle their educational struggles so that they may be able to achieve their end goals.

During these mini break-out sessions, I noticed a pattern with a couple of my Biology students. Nicco, Sarah,Tessa, and Annie, talked about how hard it was to retain all the information their teachers expected them to digest & how they continued to struggle with this particular subject. I informed the students that they should be delegating at least 45 minutes per day to Biology because the subject requires a lot more memorization than most of their other subjects. In addition, I advised them to take advantage of all the resources available to them, whether it’s their textbook, materials given out in class, valid online resources, or even videos from places like www.khanacademy.org.

I felt that these individual conference meetings were very beneficial to the students because each student goes through their own distinctive battle. As an AVID tutor, my goal is not only to teach the appropriate set of skills, but also to ascertain students’ attitudes towards school and their self-perception as learners. Furthermore, by uncovering the root of their concerns about school & listening attentively, I develop relationships with my students based on mutual respect, thereby opening their minds to learning and applying skills.

Welcome Tommy to MBMS Wednesday Mornings

Our wednesday mornings have been going great so far this year at Manhattan Beach Middle School. We want to welcome tutor Tommy to our Wednesday morning tutoring sessions. Ashley has to go student teaching now so we have recruited Tommy to help us out!

We have had a great turnout these past two weeks and have been getting a lot of good press from the school!

The last two times we have been at the Middle School we had 20-30 students show up both times which is better than the turnout from last year.

We are in a new room this year on the 2nd floor and have a lot of space for the students.

We have three tutors that attend the Wednesday morning tutoring to help the students out in any subject that they need.

We have two teacher aids that sit with us in the classroom to help out and facilitate the morning.

The students love coming to eat doughnuts since we bring doughnuts in the morning to get the students pumped up and excited to come to Wednesday morning tutoring.

We will be there every Wednesday at 8am to help students during late start and we hope to see a lot of students there!

If more students start to show up we may extend into another classroom to make sure that we have enough room for all the students!

Many of the students there on Wednesday worked on math and Social Studies.

Only a few of the students who come into the Wednesday morning at students at the Study Hut, so we have enjoyed meeting new students and hoping that they will come to the Study Hut as well!

So far we’ve had a great turn out and MBMS has been great to work with and have worked with us during every step.

A proud tutor story!

I tutor a girl who is in the 7th grade and she has a twin sister – both in the same classes. These 2 girls have been struggling in all their classes and have not been receiving the best grades (though as a tutor I knew they could do much better).

We bought the girls planners – so that they could get organized and write all their assignments down instead of using only their IPAD. We really want to help them get their grades up before the end of the year – and I feel like it can happen! I tutor one of the twins and another tutor helps her sister.

For many students, it’s only one or two classes they are focusing on – but these girls need help in all their classes – English, Spanish, Science, Social Studies, and Math.

I am very well versed in Spanish and math – my two best subjects – and not so well in English, Social Studies, and Science – but it’s nice to tutor these subjects – not only to help my student but also to reteach myself things that I have forgotten about over the years.

So together, my student and I have made a good plan and we are on the same page – with preparing ahead – doing flashcards, section outlines, and section reviews right when she finds out she has a test.

Last week we knew she had a Science test – so we prepared very early instead of her waiting until the last minute and not studying and also not telling me she had a test.

We worked on the Cardiovascular system and studied all about the heart, veins, lungs, capillaries, arteries, and many other interesting subjects. 

Long story short – she came in today and told me she got a 91% on her test and her sister got an 83%. She told me she wanted to scream with excitement when she got her test. Today, we then studied for her Social Studies test for Thursday and she really wants to get another good grade!!!

Productive Day at our El Segundo Study Hut Location Yesterday!!

Today we are talking all about the El Segundo Study Hut Office!  We provide a wide array of services, from subject tutoring to test prep to help with college admissions.  Our team of experts can tutor almost any high school subject through the AP level.  We also have tons of experience with training for the SAT, ACT, HSPT, ISEE, GRE, and many other tests.
The El Segundo Study Hut had a very productive day yesterday and we wanted to share some highlights with you all !!
Key features and highlights:
1. We signed up an AP Calc kid
2. We trimmed up the outside (we consider it the most lush hut)
3. We prepped the tutors for the next 12 weeks – since Summer is right around the corner and we need the students to keep on track during the summer to make sure they don’t fall behind.
4. We added a computer station
5. We posted AP diag dates (same as Manhattan’s) – which were March 24th and the next one coming up is April 20th!
6. We replenished materials for all the SAT subject tests
7. We graduated to a housekeeping service
8. We planned a tutor gathering
9. We found a spot to hang the surfboard
10. We put an order in for an espresso maker
11. We ordered a new shipment of after school snacks
12. We dusted the corners and behind the bookshelves

13. We stocked the mini fridge

14. We added a whiteboard
15. We added new indoor plants to the family
The El Segundo Study Hut is located on Arena Street in El Segundo off of El Segundo Blvd. Co-Owner SP and others built the Tiki Hut that is pictured above!
While the majority of our students walk or drive over for tutoring from El Segundo High School, El Segundo Middle School, Center Street School, and Richmond Street School, we also work with students from all over the lower Westside.  We tutor students from Westchester High School, St. Bernard High School, Hawthorne High School, and even Palisades High School, as well as Marymount, Notre Dame, and Loyola.

El Segundo Run for Education 5K and 10K tomorrow!!

The El Segundo Run for Education 5K and 10K are tomorrow so get pumped up!! The Study Hut will have a booth at the event and some of our tutors will be running in the race!

Here is good information from their website about the event tomorrow:

Course Description:
As one of the more unique USA Track & Field certified road courses in Southern California the Run for Education features a moderate coastal climate and a tour of downtown El Segundo, as well as, it’s neighborhoods and schools.

The 5K Run/Walk is an easy-to-moderate hill course through local neighborhoods while the 10K Run offers up a more challenging 2nd loop incorporating central downtown El Segundo and Grand Avenue’s prominent hill.

The Kid’s Fun Run will be split into a 1K and 1/2K event. The 1K is for Kids ages 6-12 years old while the 1/2K Kids Run is for the younger 2-5 year olds. All Fun Run participants will receive a kids goodie bag with gift from Mattel.

USA Track & Field Sanctioned Event:
We are proud to announce that the El Segundo Run for Education is a full USA Track and Field sanctioned event with both the 5K and 10K courses having been certified by the USA Track and Field Road Racing Technical Council.

USA Track & Field Southern California Grand Prix:
New for this year the Run for Education has been selected to be one of the official road races in the elite 2013 USATF Southern California Association Road Running Grand Prix Series.

Starting Line Corrals (NEW):
In an effort to provide every one of our participants with as comfortable a run as possible, Starting Line Corrals will be incorporated into this year’s event. The corral system assures a smooth and safe start by lining up participants of similar pace in the same area.

Runners who identify themselves as Elite Male (<18:20 5K or <38:00 10K) or Elite Female (<19:50 5K or <40:00 10K) during registration will qualify for the seeded corral up front. All other participants are asked to line up in the appropriate corrals. Large signs identifying each corral will be displayed along the starting line area. Please be courteous and look for the corral that fits you best.

Corral C: Walkers
Corral D: Participants with Strollers

Awards:
5K/10K: Male and Female – Overall 1st place finishers will receive race trophies. Medals will be awarded to 1st, 2nd & 3rd place finishers in each age category. All 12 and under 5K finishers receive medals while Kids Fun Run participants receive prizes donated by Mattel (while supplies last).

Family Fun Zone:
The Family Fun Zone has plenty to do for families of all ages! Challenge your friends and family on the many carnival games and inflatable slides. We have the little ones covered too with numerous fun creative arts and crafts activities. Proceeds to benefit local non-profit service organizations and school groups. see all the great running and fitness accessories available today.

 

 

Boardgame and BBQ Night at the Study Hut!

It’s Boardgame and BBQ Night at the Study Hut tonight!! All our tutors are super excited to spend some quality time together playing board games and eating some great BBQ !!

Since we have multiple locations.. we try to organize nights where all the tutors from each office can get together and do something fun and bond with each other!!

We have had other events including but not limited too: Christmas Parties, hanging out on Friday nights, attending events that our students from the Study Hut participate in, and many others.

We will be playing such games as: Bingo, Twister, Battleship, Sorry!, Candylane, Monopoly, Cranium, Apples to Apples, Taboo, Boggle and many more.

Co-Owner Rob will be making delicious BBQ for the tutors and sodas will be supplied!! Our fun night starts at 9:45 p.m. and you know what they say, time flies when you’re having fun!!

My tutoring sessions from this week!

Here at the Study Hut we have a unique teaching method that seems to work very well. At the Study Hut we hope to empower students. Here’s what it says on our website:

Our highly trained tutors have all graduated from local high schools and universities. Study Hut tutors have experience teaching every subject you can think of, from elementary school through AP high school courses, we have done and seen it all.”

I am one of the tutors here at the Study Hut and proud to work for such a great company. I normally tutor elementary and middle school students and truly enjoying working with each of my students! Here’s a story about one of my personal tutoring sessions!

I tutor a little girl whose a 1st grader and together we work on her homework packet. Each week she has a different number of packets… each for a different subject including but not limited to – Math, Social Science, Literature, and English. She mostly struggles with math (subtraction)… and refers to the numbers as “big numbers” – which make her nervous. During tutoring we work on the homework packet and if she gets it done early we play Word Bingo since Bingo is her favorite game.

Some of the assignments in the packet include coloring different pictures and words – which the little girl certainly enjoys! We work on pronunciation of words, spelling words, definitions, and other fun assignments.

The little girl also has started to learn Spanish, so we work on Spanish vocabulary as well and basic phrases every week. I write the words down for her in English with the Spanish translation and she always highlights the English words with a highlighter. She studies them at home and does a great job!

Every student you tutor is different and they each work well in their own ways.

Tips to Avenge Your Finals Without Pulling Out Your Hair!

Finals week is coming quick and you might start feeling that uneasy shadow lingering over your shoulders, but luckily there are several tips, tricks, and techniques to make the next few weeks bearable. First of all, you need to make the trade and remember that drowsiness, exhaustion, and brain drain will all pass, but your GPA is forever. Accepting the climb ahead of you will set you on the right path for success. Regardless of the subject matter, people all learn the same which is why you know that cramming doesn’t work, taking long exaggerated breaks, and side tracking yourself is all sure ways to fail your finals. Thus, find an absolutely quite and if necessary (desolate) place to buckle down and really hit the books; this is a great time to turn off your cell phone and get away from your social notifications. Make goals for yourself and set time limits on how long you will study before you take a scheduled break. Don’t feel the urge to work in study groups if you know they will distract you, instead work on as much material as you can and save all your questions for your teacher, tutor, or friends for later. It’s important to build on what you know rather than give yourself test anxiety on what you need to know. Evaluate how your teacher or professor has given previous tests and quizzes and determine a study strategy that will most likely reflect you’re finals, midterm, test, or even future quiz. Then chunk the material into pieces and absolutely take your time learning the material – It takes more than an hour to digest a century of history! Finally, you need to make it interesting. Take pride in what you’re learning and mentally dazzle yourself.
