The Best Palos Verdes Algebra Tutor

November 15th, 2017

Are you looking for a top-tier Palos Verdes algebra tutor?  If you are, you’ve come to the right place. The following article will give both students and parents a firsthand breakdown, top to bottom, regarding the important elements that a Palos Verdes algebra tutor will need in order to equip students.

Palos Verdes Algebra tutor

First of all, we need to have our basics down. It’s a lot less painful to practice math when we aren’t stumbling over the little steps that are present in every topic. We’re talking about order of operations (PEMDAS)—mastering it to understand how to simplify expressions and manipulate equations with confidence—as well as how positive and negative numbers interact under different situations. This second area—knowing how negative numbers add and multiply— provides a necessary foundation for mental math and logic.

The struggles that, we, as a collective Palos Verdes algebra tutor see most commonly with algebra students arise when adding/subtracting integers (as well as multiplying/dividing them), combining terms, and factoring goes awry. These struggles happen all across the student spectrum: we see them in students who are struggling in their classes, and with students who are doing amazingly well. If math is difficult for you, I really recommend you call Study Hut Tutoring, just down the hill in the Redondo Riviera to pair up with a top tier Palos Verdes algebra tutor.  Take time to go over the basics as you encounter them again in your current material and repair those long-forgotten errors. Review whenever you feel yourself struggling with anything you have done in the past; the more recently you originally learned it, the easier it will be cement it. If you’re a student who does well in math, make sure to be careful with the small things: as you move on from one step to the next, be cautious of small mistakes.

Most of the issues that algebra students tend to have, though, stem from a larger mistake: not showing all of their work. Forgot to add a like term or distribute a negative somewhere? Neglecting to properly write out each step was likely a cause. Made a calculation error somewhere along the line? Locating the mistake is going to be a lot easier if you’ve shown all your work. The reasons that students refrain from showing certain steps vary, as do the errors that tend to plague them as a result of it. But whether it stems from students’ overconfidence in their abilities with mental math or simply a lack of diligence in writing everything out, the result is always the same: red marks on tests and quizzes that could likely have been avoided had all of the work just been written out.

Peninsula SAT Prep

September 19th, 2016

Peninsula SAT prep at it’s finest! Like the ACT better? Peninsula ACT Prep has never been better.

Welcome back to school We are so pumped that Peninsula AVID is back up and running in full swing. Study Hut has been collaborating with the AVID program and delivering tutorials to the AVID students for many years now. AVID takes place every Thursday from 10am-12noon with six tutors from our Redondo Beach Location that are hand picked to attend the AVID and test prep training and help students improve upon their test prep skills. We have all four grade levels that participate and each grade level has two class periods for AVID since Peninsula has a block schedule.

During the AVID classes, each student comes prepared with their tutorial form filled out with their question or information that they want to review or understand better. Each student has a chance to get up and present their question to their small groups and then the tutor will help answer any questions needed while the other students take notes and participate in the discussion. Each student gets about 5-6 minutes for their individual question which makes the hour go by quickly once each student has presented.

We are able to track students progress and the students get points for their achievements, being engaging and participating in the group lessons. Another awesome collaboration we have going on with Peninsula is that a Study Hut manager along side a teacher lead Peninsula SAT prep as well as Peninsula ACT prep.

There are about 25 students that are taught by one manager and one teacher that receive instruction and receive homework assignments to complete and to help track their growth. The sophomores receive test Peninsula SAT prep once per month and the juniors receive Peninsula ACT prep help once per week. We use an online system that we use in office that helps track progress and makes for a smooth class and easy way to generate the information needed. The manager will help with the Math portion of the test prep and the teacher will help with the English portion of the test prep. We are very excited for the school year and to see many familiar faces around campus!

Practice SAT and ACT Exams

Study Hut Tutoring offers free practice SAT and ACT exams. It is important to know that tackling the SAT or ACT can be a daunting challenge for many students. Performing to the best of one’s availability is vital in order to strive for acceptance to increasingly competitive colleges and universities. Students are often unaware of how to effectively prepare for the SAT or ACT. Rest assured, Study Hut Tutoring in El Segundo is here to offer guidance and support through tailored test prep tutoring and free SAT and ACT practice tests.

In order to provide our students with specialized, tailored test ACT and SAT tutoring sessions, we encourage our students to complete a full length, free SAT or ACT practice test. We then critically analyze the results and prepare a tutoring plan tailored to our students, emphasizing focus on areas of potential improvement. As we move through scheduled tutoring sessions, students will return to take additional free SAT or ACT practice tests, which allows us to check our progress in real time and shift focus when the need is indicated by performance.

In addition to reviewing specific concepts and learning new strategies and test taking techniques, exercising to build test taking endurance is crucial. The SAT and ACT are each about four hours long. No matter how you cut it, four hours is a long time to maintain focus, flex cognitive abilities, and perform at a consistently high level. By completing free SAT or ACT practice tests, Study Hut students develop their ability to persevere through mental fatigue. Without a simulated experience made possible by full length practice tests, improving endurance is difficult, and Study Hut is pleased to offer this service to our students.

The fall SAT and ACT are approaching quickly, and here at Study Hut we are eager to see the performance of our prepared students and to observe them flourish. Having completed a personalized test prep plan, in conjunction with effective independent study and the completion of multiple SAT or ACT practice tests, our students will be confident and prepared to rise to the challenge on test day and endure through fatigue and difficulty.

Free SAT ACT Practice Tests

July 22nd, 2016

Study Hut Tutoring offers free SAT ACT practice tests. The South Bay is filled with a variety of companies that offer training for the SAT, ACT, ISEE, HSPT, SSAT, GRE, LSAT, and every other kind of test you can imagine. Some offer just group classes, others do one-on-one. Some will come to your house, while many will hold lessons in their office. Curriculums change, strategies differ, and all of them have their pros and cons. However, one thing cannot be ignored no matter what kind of training you seek: Make sure you are given plenty of full length practice tests!

DSC_0190

Whether you are training for a test or preparing for a marathon, you cannot adequately improve unless you first know where you are starting. For test training, it is imperative that you take an actual certified test (whichever one you are preparing for) so you get a good sense of what the test is, and we get an accurate reading of where you are starting. At Study Hut, we call this a Diagnostic Test. Armed with this report of your greatest strengths and most glaring weaknesses, we can create a tailored curriculum and study plan that fits YOU! This will mean a much more efficient use of both our times, and maximize our results.

Throughout your training, it is paramount to take officially sanctioned, full length practice tests every few weeks. Not only will this help us track your progress toward your ultimate score goal, but it gives you a safe arena to practice the concepts and strategies that we have been teaching you. It’s like sparing for a boxer, or a fully-padded practice for a football player! We can then analyze your performance, question by question, to see where your breakdowns were. This “game tape” will then be used to show you the benefits of what we are doing, and show you the dangers of falling back into old habits.

Long-story-longer, any training regimen, be it academic or athletic, needs to be anchored with an initial Diagnostic Test, and a healthy amount of Practice Tests. They are the only way to ensure broad and efficient training, and a high quality result. Study Hut offers free diagnostic and practice tests for every standardized test you can imagine. To sign up for one, just fill out a contact form on the right, and a manager will call you shortly.
Happy Training!

PV Scholar Quiz 2016

March 6th, 2016

Are you ready with all your random Jeopardy knowledge and facts? You’d better be ready; PV Scholar Quiz 2016: Scholars Awaken is coming to Palos Verdes High School in just one short week! To spice up this year’s tournament, students and faculty are both allowed to create teams to compete to be named the PV Scholar Quiz Champions of 2016. With 69 teams initially signed up for the Quiz, 68 have advanced to the final March Madness tournament. This year, Team Sorry will be seeking revenge for their loss to last year’s winners who graduated. Students Duncan Reid, Brian Kaufman, Matt Donahue, and Austin Rule make up the formidable Team Sorry.

How does it work?

You’ve seen the TV quiz show Jeopardy, right? Contestants answer questions in different categories, have a certain amount of time to give their answer, and win points for each correct answer? That’s the one! In the Scholar Quiz, teams of four faculty or students answer questions in three different formats: Lightning Rounds, Toss Up Questions, and Bonus Rounds. Any question asked can be on any number of different topics, no matter the format. In a single match, there are two teams of four students or faculty each, a Reader, a Judge, and a Scorer.

Contestants can expect to see both academic questions, like English or United States History, and more fun or random categories, such as famous quotations or music. Each team is given a placard to raise in order to pose an answer to a question. The first team to raise their placard has the first opportunity to answer the question. The rival team is given an opportunity to answer the same question if the first team fails to answer the question correctly. Either team can answer a Toss Up question, which will lead to a Bonus Round for the team who answers it correctly first. During the Bonus Round, this team is given an opportunity to answer four questions on one central topic, each worth five points for a bonus of up to twenty points for that team. In a Lightning Round, ten questions are given rapid fire to both teams. Each team is only allowed to answer once, but are penalized for questions answered incorrectly. Unlike Jeopardy, where individuals compete with only their own knowledge to support them, teammates are allowed to work together in the Scholar Quiz.

When is it?

PV Scholar Quiz 2016 will take place from March 7th to March 14th. Student teams will compete amongst themselves as will the faculty teams to determine the top teams in those categories. The highly anticipated final round will be held on March 14th to determine the real winners of the Scholar Quiz: students or faculty. But wait…there’s more! The winners will take home a minimum $1000 cash scholarship! Good luck to all contestants and teams – may the F = ma be with you.

Use Your Break Wisely!

December 13th, 2015

Oh the weather outside is frightful

Use Your Winter Break Wisely!

Ok the weather is pretty nice…blue skies for days…Ahhhh. Winter Break! A time to relax, eat, hang out with family, and celebrate. You should definitely do all of those things… (here comes a but)…(drumroll please)…

BUT

You should ALSO use your break wisely! Open that backpack and do some studying over Winter Break. It’s been a long, hard semester, and you do not want to spoil all that you have put into it by slacking right before finals. With the biggest test of the semester right around the corner, many of you already have a study guide or an idea of what your final will look like. Use that!

You can start making flashcards for vocab. That’s something you can do with Mariah Carey belting out “All I Want for Christmas…is an A!” and it’s been proven that listening to music while studying can improve your performance on the test!

You should make a detailed outline with flow charts, timelines and pretty colors. This will refresh your memory of the topics and provide a beautiful study guide you can use once finals week arrives.

Grab your old tests or practice tests, and retake them, checking your answers as you go. This will help you decide where you need to allocate the most time for studying, and where you can skim a bit because you already have a good handle on the material.

DO NOT simply run your eyes over every single chapter in the book, or every single page of notes you’ve written. This is a waste of your time. Rereading is a passive activity, plus it is much too general. With so much material to cover, you are better off zeroing in on what’s important (hint: what’s on the study guide or what was on old tests).
Have fun over break, but spending the entire two weeks binge-watching Parks and Rec for the 3rd time will come back to haunt you when finals week arrives! Put in a few hours over break and I promise you’ll thank yourself later!

Palos Verdes Spanish Tutor

November 12th, 2015

Struggling to understand Spanish? It used to be easier, right? But then all of a sudden, you get dumped with a mountain of new verb conjugations, subjunctive moods, grammar and vocabulary, and even though you try really hard to understand the material, it’s just not clicking.

Well, your worries are over: come down to Study Hut Redondo Beach to see a Palos Verdes Spanish tutor! Located on the outskirts of the Riviera on Avenue I, we’re ready to get you back on track to ace every Spanish test and to boost your confidence in your writing and speaking abilities. Even if you feel like there’s no way that you can catch up–that there’s so much material and you don’t know where to begin–don’t doubt yourself! You can do it, and we want to help.

Palos Verdes Spanish Tutor

The Study Hut is a tutoring organization that has coached Spanish students in the South Bay for years. We employ local college graduates well-versed in the language, and thanks to their expertise and dedication to the students, we have seen many success stories. Most recently, one of our current seniors, Joey, was struggling in Spanish 3 for most of his junior year. He fell behind early on, and felt that he couldn’t catch up.

BUT, once he started coming in to see a Palos Verdes Spanish tutor once a week, then twice a week, and finally three times a week, he improved dramatically! We boosted his grade from an F to a B in just a few months, and by the end of the year, he could conjugate the preterite, imperfect, present perfect, past perfect, conditional and future tenses no problem. Apart from conjugations, Joey also learned to how and when to use the subjunctive mood, and increased his efficiency in remembering new vocabulary. Over the course of a semester of working with a Palos Verdes Spanish tutor, he not only grew more confident in using Spanish, he also acquired crucial study skills that transferred over to his other classes, and will continue to assist him throughout his education.

So, do you want to improve? Think you’re willing to give us a chance? Go ahead and fill out the contact form on this page or give us a ring at (310)540-5888. We’re looking forward to meeting you and helping you succeed! ¡Suerte!
