Spanish class can be tough and overwhelming for many students. Between vocabulary, grammar, writing, speaking, and listening there is a lot to learn in a short amount of time. Our tutors can provide extra support and insight with learning and study strategies specifically geared toward the student’s subject and learning style. We are experienced in breaking down complex content into simple building blocks needed for learning a language. We provide one on one tutoring so that that our staff can cater to your student’s individual needs. We offer Spanish tutoring from Spanish 1 all the way to AP Spanish. We have Newport Beach Spanish tutors who know the curriculum and know how to help students meet their goals.
How many sessions do you recommend?
We see the most success with our Newport Beach students who come in on a weekly basis. While a review session before the big test can help, we see more success with students who are consistently working with a tutor each week. Spanish can be tricky, and like any language, practice makes progress. The more time a student can get with a tutor on a regular basis, the more likely they will reach their desired goals. Consistency is KEY when it comes to Spanish tutoring.

AP Classes are no joke. They come with a heavy work load, and it is easy to feel overwhelmed. Here are some Corona del Mar APUSH tutor tips to keep you afloat!
Quick 1-2-3 Tips
I have my quick 1-2-3 that I usually go after first (any Corona Del Mar APUSH tutor worth a nickel should be able to give you these tips…):
1) Make a list of all grades lower than an 85%
2) Attack the lowest grades first:
-Make chapter outline
-Take practice quizzes/online tests on that material
-Take section review/chapter review tests from book or study guides
3) Make flashcards on all missed questions from review quizzing (each card needs 5 bullet points on the back hitting these three areas: a) definition b) historical significance c) political, social, economic implications
General Corona del Mar APUSH Tutor Tips
Overall there should be some major units to review that the teacher hammers (and really what the College Board/AP test likes to drill). Understanding the major pillars from each unit, and re-reading the study guides and ANNOTATING as you read, will help to keep the major points at the top of your mind.
Know the major players from each unit, what their contributions were, and how they made lasting changes (why we are learning about them.)
In terms of execution of the plan, make a checklist with everything that you will study, and allocate a specific number of minutes to each portion of the checklist. That way you can assign a date/time to the task to ensure it gets done (and you can plan your life so you aren’t cramming like crazy).
Still feel like you’re drowning? Call Study Hut today or fill out a contact form to the right. Our expert tutors can give you the tools and knowledge you need to prepare for chapter tests and the big, bad AP!
Ok the weather is pretty nice…blue skies for days…Ahhhh. Winter Break! A time to relax, eat, hang out with family, and celebrate. You should definitely do all of those things… (here comes a but)…(drumroll please)…
BUT
You should ALSO use your break wisely! Open that backpack and do some studying over Winter Break. It’s been a long, hard semester, and you do not want to spoil all that you have put into it by slacking right before finals. With the biggest test of the semester right around the corner, many of you already have a study guide or an idea of what your final will look like. Use that!
You can start making flashcards for vocab. That’s something you can do with Mariah Carey belting out “All I Want for Christmas…is an A!” and it’s been proven that listening to music while studying can improve your performance on the test!
You should make a detailed outline with flow charts, timelines and pretty colors. This will refresh your memory of the topics and provide a beautiful study guide you can use once finals week arrives.
Grab your old tests or practice tests, and retake them, checking your answers as you go. This will help you decide where you need to allocate the most time for studying, and where you can skim a bit because you already have a good handle on the material.
DO NOT simply run your eyes over every single chapter in the book, or every single page of notes you’ve written. This is a waste of your time. Rereading is a passive activity, plus it is much too general. With so much material to cover, you are better off zeroing in on what’s important (hint: what’s on the study guide or what was on old tests). Have fun over break, but spending the entire two weeks binge-watching Parks and Rec for the 3rd time will come back to haunt you when finals week arrives! Put in a few hours over break and I promise you’ll thank yourself later!
Study Hut Tutoring is a place where students can come to reinforce math topics. All sessions with the tutor are tailored to the needs of each student. Whether they are looking to prepare for a upcoming test or if they wanted to review problems they had in the past, we will make sure that all their needs are met with the Newport Beach math tutors.
The local tutors make sure that each session goes at a comfortable pace for any student. This is especially important during one-on-one appointments because this will allow the student to absorb the material completely. Many times in a classroom setting, the teacher will either go too quickly or they will be unable to explain a concept clearly enough for everyone to grasp. Our tutors do not move on until they are sure the student has mastered the topic.
Not only do our Newport Beach math tutors help students with math concepts, but they also teach study skills that will help students in future chapters so they can be better equipped and prepared to tackle any daunting math problem. This includes formatting math problems neatly and clearly to eliminate any errors due to misreading and having a very organized planner so that homework isn’t overdue, quizzes aren’t forgotten, and tests are not ill-prepared.
Finally, our tutors put a lot of effort to ensure that Study Hut is a place where students can be both at ease and focused. We want to have a relaxing atmosphere where students love to come because they feel accomplished by the time they leave. Tutoring is effective only if the student likes to come initially, and has a level of trust with their tutor.
Contact a Newport Beach math tutor today so we can get a feel for how your student is progressing. We can work together to provide the skills necessary so they can become a successful math wizard!
Having trouble with common grammar rules? Come see a Newport English Tutor for help today! While it is easy to rely on spell check for corrections on papers and emails (we’re all guilty of it!), you will look very silly if you make these common mistakes. Spell check won’t catch them for you because they ‘look’ right to spell check.
Using I and me in the wrong places. It’s as simple as this: I is a subject, me is the object of a prepositional phrase. What’s a prepositional phrase? Glad you asked. This Newport English tutor loves a good prepositional phrase. A prepositional phrase starts with a preposition and gives descriptive information like location: under, over, within, outside of, by, about, etc. Here’s a good website for more information about prepositions. I am the subject of this sentence. This sentence is about me.
Confusing there, their, and they’re. This is something learned in the third grade, so you should be very embarrassed if you make this mistake in a high school paper. There refers to place (it has the word here in it!!) They’re is a contraction meaning they are (the apostrophe ‘replaces’ the a!). Their is the possessive. The best Newport English tutors are found there. They’re going to eat all the turkey without me! Their mom really knows how to fill their bellies on Thanksgiving. *You’re (contraction for you are) and your (possessive) fall prey to this same mistake.
Using ‘could of’, ‘should of,’ or ‘would of’ instead of ‘could have,’ ‘should have,’ or ‘would have’ This actually comes from lazy speech patterns. When someone says ‘could’ve’ (the contraction for ‘could have’) many people hear ‘could of’. THAT’S NOT WHAT THEY’RE SAYING–or if it is, they’ve fallen into the trap as well. Don’t be lazy, people. “I wish that we could have gone to the World Series this year.”-a grammatically correct (and sad) Mike Trout
Mixing up its and it’s. One is possessive and one is a contraction. It’s means it is, its means belonging to it. It’s the number one mistake! The cat scratched its nose.
Using commas willy nilly. Commas are a part of grammar and not to used on a whim. They are not for separating ideas (that’s a period), or just to show a pause in thought. They go between independent clauses, or as part of a list, or in a number of other grammatically correct places. Refer to this awesome comma guide for direction! After the movie tonight, the soccer star will get eight hours of sleep.
Are you having trouble in biology? Do terms like thylakoid, carbon fixation, meiosis, and apoptosis sound like gibberish to you? Don’t worry! We can help.
Here are 5 useful resources our Newport biology tutors have found that can help!
If it’s photosynthesis that is giving you tons of issues, this is an easy-to-read and thorough study sheet put together by a Newport Biology Tutor from the Study Hut team. It covers everything from terms to structures to processes.
Biology is a very visual subject. It is all about processes that are happening all around you, and even within you. Reading about it in a dry science textbook robs it of this vivacity. This website, CellsAlive, has some great animations that give these concepts life. Check out this animation of mitosis: http://www.cellsalive.com/mitosis_js.htm CellsAlive also has videoes of common biological processes as they happen in real life. For example, here is a video (with some great sound effects added) of what happens to a bacterial colony when it’s invaded by a virus: http://www.cellsalive.com/phage.htm
If your biology book is overwhelmingly large, and incredibly daunting, BiologyCorner has clear, concise concept maps that can help condense the information to a more manageable, bite-size morsel. It has pictures, coloring pages like this one (don’t laugh! They’re really helpful!) puzzles, and quizzes.
If it’s not precisely the material that’s giving you issue but you just have a hard time studying, you can use things like Chegg’s free flashcard app to put those flashcards right on your phone. That way whenever you have a free second (in the car, waiting in line, as you’re falling asleep) you can run through them. Science shows that spaced repetition increases memory. If your phone is actually the problem, not the solution, you can download apps like SelfControl Freedom (free), Disconnect (free) that will lock you out of the internet or your entire phone for a certain amount of time.
So maybe you’ve tried these things and it still does not make sense. We’ve been there. For some, biology is just another language. Luckily we have Newport Biology Tutors that can translate biology into a language you can understand! We can make it fun and memorable and give you the one-on-one attention you need to dominate this biology class. To make an appointment or if you just have a few questions, fill out a contact form to the right, or call us today at 949-226-1573.
It was only a year ago that our phones were ringing off the hook here at the Newport Beach Study Hut with concerned parents, some of whom were asking about current Study Hut students, and others that were new or prospective clients, and they all had questions about the same thing: Common Core tutoring in Newport Beach. Parents wanted to know what the Common Core math curriculum was going to change, what it would look like in English classrooms, and how we were assisting our students with Common Core tutoring now that we had begun the school year and were working with the content first-hand.
Many websites do contain plenty of helpful information that can demystify the curriculum and break down the process, such as this official California Department of Education site: http://www.cde.ca.gov/ci/ma/im/ and while information like this can be helpful, sometimes it is just too confusing for the average mom or dad trying to rush one kid to piano lessons and another to soccer practice.
After having gone through all grade levels of the Common Core curriculum last year, we here at Study Hut can officially say that we have got you covered. We know where students are most likely to get stuck, and we know how to help them get back up and truly understand the critical foundational material involved in each of the building lessons. Whether you love Common Core’s arrival in Newport Beach or just plain can’t stand it, we can all agree that the lessons and levels build upon each other. So when your student gets caught on a few concepts, please do not just accept it as a bad grade and move on. These deficiencies or areas of missing conceptual understanding will come back to bite students later in the year, and in most cases with math and English, the same concepts will come back up year after year. That is just all the more reason to make sure to get a solid base for your son or daughter as early as possible, and be sure to seek help with Common Core tutoring if you feel like your kiddo needs a little bit of extra support in order to get caught up or stay ahead in his or her classes at Newport Harbor High School or Corona del Mar High School.
Having a hard time studying for your math test? One of our tutors from the Newport Beach/CDM Study Hut shares her study tips!
Repetition, Repetition, Repetition See what I did there? Math is about learning the steps. This holds true for Algebra, Geometry, Stats, and even Calculus. You have to be comfortable with what you’re doing at each step, no matter what curveball is thrown. Think of a baseball player who spends hours in the cage, or a basketball player who finishes every practice with 10 made free throws (Kobe Bryant has actually been known to come to the gym early to make 800 jump shots before practice)! The more practice you put in, doing the problems over and over again, the easier it will be and the better you will do on the real thing.
Give It a Scent While you’re studying for that Geometry midterm or Trig final, or another subject for that matter, chew a unique smelling gum, or spray a new perfume/air freshener. Then, while you’re taking the test, chew that same gum, or spray that same scent. The smell will trigger your memories of studying and improve your performance!
Study Somewhere New While it is great to have a spot where you always study (it has everything you need and a comfy chair!) it’s good to mix it up sometimes. Go to the local library, Starbucks down the street, or just a new spot in the house. Just like with the new scent, your memories of studying will be linked with the feel/look of the new study spot.
This CDM math tutor’s favorite mnemonic.
Create Mnemonics While it is rarer that you need to memorize lists in math, memorizing formulas can be daunting. Using a common mnemonic can ensure that you commit that bad boy to memory. For example, many people like to use Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally to remember the order of operations (Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division, Addition and Subtraction). The only thing better than using a common one like this is making one up for yourself, because then it has personal meaning and you are more likely to remember it.
Ask for Help No one can do it alone! Tutors at Study Hut have been collecting tips and tricks like these for years, and would love to share them with you! Call today to start building strong study habits and acing those tests!
Study Hut Tutoring is excited to announce that several tutors from our team in Newport Beach were able to attend JSerra Catholic High School’s annual College Fair this evening. Students from JSerra and other surrounding Orange County high schools came together to learn about different colleges and career options.
While refreshments were abundant and the mood was undoubtedly jovial, most of the students in attendance at JSerra were quite serious. After all, the College Fair is a rare opportunity to meet college admissions officers in person, and the impression that a student makes can actually have quite an impact on his or her admissions chances. While some universities send alumni representatives, many schools’ admissions officers that will be the actual decision-makers when student applications are submitted were present, fielded questions and met potential applicants. The JSerra College Fair was, therefore, a courteous yet competitive outing, with each student attempting to put his or her best foot forward. We saw some very well dressed students in attendance, ready to make a great impression.
So what was Study Hut Tutoring doing at the College Fair? Was this just another event to grab a booth at the carnival and pass out candy? Absolutely not. While most students at a College Fair are likely not roaming the crowd looking for a math tutor or a writing tutor in Newport Beach (our closest office), many have questions about SAT training, ACT tutoring, and the entire college admissions process. That is where Study Hut comes in; we know the process and we are familiar with the ins-and-outs of navigating most university websites and application forms. We were able to help current students and new students to better understand what the college application process looks like, from essay writing and collecting Letters of Recommendation to scholarship searching and submitting test scores. Of course, if you have any questions or need any help, we are here for you!
The attendance was high for the JSerra College Fair last night!
Corona Del Mar ACT tutoring has never been better than at Study Hut Tutoring. How can we be so sure? What actually makes us “the best”? In addition to our referral generating track record that speaks for itself, we have a competitive advantage in working with students, and knowing their weaknesses. We also leave our competition in the dust with respect to our tools, our tutors, and our years of experience tutoring students in Southern California. Like our website says, we are local (our owners are always on-site), we are passionate, and we are cutting edge. This means you get a greater return on your investment for each dollar spent and each minute you spend studying.
The process begins with a free, full-length practice test. This practice ACT is a previously proctored full-length actual exam that has been administered. We offer the test on a bi-monthly basis at our location across from the Balboa Bay Club, next to J. Galt Clothing and the Taco Bell. Our address is 1600 West Coast Hwy.
Once you’ve signed up for our free practice test, you’ll arrive bright-eyed and bushy-tailed to our office to take the 4-hour exam. When you’re done, we will schedule a free, pro-bono 20 minute post-test consultation to go over the results. This means that you will have all the information in front of you in order to make the best decision without spending a dime.
During this consultation we will go over every detail and answer all of your questions:
-How many points can I improve?
-How much training do I need to get the score I want?
-What’s the best course of action given my stated goals?
-What’s the cost?
The answers to all of these questions is simple: IT DEPENDS. Every student scores slightly differently, and every student has a different set of goals. Some students want a weekly session of Corona Del Mar ACT tutoring, while others want a bi-weekly session.
For every two hour session, we provide an hour of customized homework.
For more information, please fill out the contact form and we can get you exactly what you’ve been looking for.
