El Segundo Math Tutor
Many students, ranging from elementary to high school, face new challenging concepts each day in the math classroom, and know that if their understanding of a single concept is faulty, then understanding upcoming concepts can become a nightmarish math experience. Here at Study Hut El Segundo, we are committed to providing our local students with the help that they need to reach their own personal academic goals. Our highly qualified tutors create a tailored individual tutoring experience, honing in on specific concepts to make the most of each and every tutoring session. You won’t find a better El Segundo math tutor elsewhere.
Our approach to tutoring emphasizes the importance of addressing each student’s individual needs. Some students come to Study Hut seeking help with comprehension and clarification of complex concepts, others come for assistance with assignment completion. Moreover, students focus on enrichment and moving ahead of the class, giving them exposure to new concepts before they see them in the classroom. Whatever the specific need of a student may be, the advantages of individualized tutoring cannot be understated.
Here at Study Hut, your own El Segundo math tutor is available to help students at all levels of mathematics. Whether your student is beginning to learn the fundamentals of algebra, engaging in the complex reasoning involved in geometric proofs, understanding dimensional analysis in calculus, or scrutinizing circumstances with statistics, we are equipped for the job and are eager to see progress.
If your student is feeling the pressures of math class, give us a call and we can discuss a plan of action to help your student reach their potential. We are looking forward to equipping you with your very own top-notch El Segundo math tutor!
Study Hut Tutoring is excited to announce that several tutors from our team in Newport Beach were able to attend JSerra Catholic High School’s annual College Fair this evening. Students from JSerra and other surrounding Orange County high schools came together to learn about different colleges and career options.
While refreshments were abundant and the mood was undoubtedly jovial, most of the students in attendance at JSerra were quite serious. After all, the College Fair is a rare opportunity to meet college admissions officers in person, and the impression that a student makes can actually have quite an impact on his or her admissions chances. While some universities send alumni representatives, many schools’ admissions officers that will be the actual decision-makers when student applications are submitted were present, fielded questions and met potential applicants. The JSerra College Fair was, therefore, a courteous yet competitive outing, with each student attempting to put his or her best foot forward. We saw some very well dressed students in attendance, ready to make a great impression.
So what was Study Hut Tutoring doing at the College Fair? Was this just another event to grab a booth at the carnival and pass out candy? Absolutely not. While most students at a College Fair are likely not roaming the crowd looking for a math tutor or a writing tutor in Newport Beach (our closest office), many have questions about SAT training, ACT tutoring, and the entire college admissions process. That is where Study Hut comes in; we know the process and we are familiar with the ins-and-outs of navigating most university websites and application forms. We were able to help current students and new students to better understand what the college application process looks like, from essay writing and collecting Letters of Recommendation to scholarship searching and submitting test scores. Of course, if you have any questions or need any help, we are here for you!
The attendance was high for the JSerra College Fair last night!
Timeline: the revised SAT, or [rSAT], will be offered 7 times a year beginning March, 2016. The upcoming PSAT in October will be a shortened version of the [rSAT]–this PSAT is optional and scores come back 6-8 weeks after the test is administered at your high school. Study Hut will offer the new [rSAT] in the fall alongside the ACT so students are able to experience the style of the new exam.
How can Study Hut Tutoring help?
Study Hut Tutoring offers free practice tests for the new SAT. This means that once you fill out our contact form or give a call, we can sign you up for a free, full-length new SAT exam. Once you’ve completed the exam, you get to go home, hang tight, and wait for us to grade the exam. Don’t worry, we will call you once the exam is graded to set up a free 20-30 minute consultation to go over the entire exam. During the meeting we will look at all of your strengths and weaknesses, and recommend the best course of action for you based on your score goal, your desired university you would love to attend, your current schedule, and how long you wish to train for the test. We look forward to getting you geared up and ready for test day.
Content changes (the [rSAT] is now a lot like the ACT):
1. The elimination of difficult vocabulary
2. Added Emphasis on command of evidence
3. Essay Analyzing a Source
4. Math Focused on Three Key Areas
5. Problems Grounded in Real World Contexts
6. Analysis in Science and Social Studies
7. Emphasis on Founding Documents and Great Global Conversation
Stick to the ACT. Study Hut offers practice tests (previously proctored real ACT exams), free post-test consultations, small group-courses, and tailored one-on-one training. We know your kiddo, we’re masters of the ACT, and we’re here to help because we’ve been there and done that.
It has been yet another successful year at the Study Hut in Redondo Beach. We saw improved grades, great SAT and ACT scores, and admissions to awesome colleges all over the US. From the schools in Palos Verdes (PVHS and Peninsula), to RUHSD, and all the Torrance schools in between (South and West mostly), all our beloved Hut kiddos have truly set the bar in the South Bay.
For instance, Darrian went from getting D’s in her freshman year, to getting B’s this year after getting routine subject tutoring. Thomas was able to raise his worst subject, Spanish, from an F to a B! We were also ecstatic to see Austin raise all of his grades to A’s and B’s this year with tutoring twice a week after getting straight C’s last year. Austin’s mother has told us that her relationship with Austin has improved dramatically since they no longer have fights over his grades anymore! Connor stunned his mom and brought his tutor to tears of joy when he earned straight A’s both semesters of his junior year after receiving straight C’s during his Freshman and Sophomore years.
Many of our students demonstrated exceptional improvement on their SAT and ACT scores. Connor raised his ACT score from a 20 to a 29 in just three months after coming in for ACT tutoring twice a week. Sophia juggled her hectic life of AP classes, club soccer, and numerous school clubs by coming in once a week for four months for ACT tutoring. Sophia raised her score from a 29 to a 35, which secured her early admission to one of the most prestigious academic institutions in Massachusetts, Wellesley College. Shivani not only scored an outstanding 2300 on her SAT, but used test preparation at Study Hut to ace her SAT 2 tests as well in Math and English.
We could not be more proud of the incredible college acceptances our students earned after getting college guidance with their tutors. Olivia was not only admitted to every college she applied to, but got into her dream school, USC, to pursue studies in Marine Biology. Kelley was accepted to the incredibly competitive music industry program at USC, which only admits thirty students annually. Hayley will be attending one of the most impacted schools in California, San Diego State, which has been her dream school since she was in sixth grade. Eliza and Mollie will both be attending the most impacted college in the country, UCLA, in the fall.
With finals right around the corner, a lot of different high schools are gearing up for their weekend finals cram sessions. Study Hut tutors will be helping out at Palos Verdes High School, Palos Verdes Peninsula High School, and West Torrance High School. The AVID classes are holding the sessions in the Palos Verdes Peninsula School District.
There are a lot of different ways that students can maximize their results during tutoring in large groups. First, find other students who are studying the same subject, or better yet are in the same class with the same teacher. Someone may have taken better notes, or have been there on a day when you were absent. Together your group can try and work your way through the more difficult concepts of the semester together. Go through the study guide for the final together. Make sure that the answers make sense to everyone. If you are having trouble with a concept, have a friend explain it to you. They may be able to make it make sense in a way that your teacher could not. Do the same for your friends. Teaching the material to your friends will also help you get a better grasp on the information. If any of you have contradicting answers to one of the questions, make sure you find out what is actually correct either by looking in your book, asking a tutor, or by searching on the internet. Afterward, review the information later in the day or the following day on your own to make sure that it all sank in.
As the summer turns in to fall and the school year takes hold, high school students all over the world become immersed in the complex ritual that is the college application. This task may seem like an unbearably daunting one and the defining moment for the rest of your life (it certainly did for me). However, like the beginning of any grand odyssey it begins with just a few, simple steps. The first of these is learning what your options are. In other words, what colleges are out there and what do they have to offer?
The best place to find this out is from someone who knows about the college or university firsthand. Luckily for those in the Newport-Mesa area, over 200 colleges are sending representatives to the College Fair at the OC Fairgrounds Building 10 tonight, Wednesday, October 8th from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. More College Fair info
Meeting with a representative to find out more about a college is a great way to narrow down your options and figure out which campuses are worth visiting in person. This college fair is also the perfect opportunity to find out about all of the different programs that a school offers. While you might have your heart set on a particular major or career now, it never hurts to make sure that a potential alma mater also has other programs that you are interested in. After all, if you are anything like me you want to not only get a good academic education but also meet interesting people along the way.
If you are still feeling overwhelmed about the application process, there is no need to fear. Here at Study Hut we have years of experience with college applications and can help you break down your odyssey in to a few, simple steps. Study Hut tutors have the opportunity to work with the Academics Via Individual Determination (AVID) program at different high schools. One of these schools is Peninsula High School in Palos Verdes. During her freshman year, a student named Cindy was among one of the students I got to regularly help last school year. Now as a sophomore, Cindy comes in to Study Hut for tutoring and it seems fair to say that she is both enjoying it and benefitting from it. While waiting for her ride after one of her sessions, Cindy decided to hang around. Since I did not have a student at the time, I invited Cindy to sit at my table until her ride came (more like she invited herself to come sit). We chatted about her AVID class, school functions, friends, and life in general. Although the conversation only lasted about five minutes, it was one of those small events that happened to make my day that much better. It was a great feeling knowing that she was comfortable enough to talk to me like a friend and I was able to provide her with advice as a mentor. On behalf of the Study Hut tutors, we strive to provide an environment that balances serious styles and laid-back styles in order to allow students to succeed inside the classroom and beyond. This is just one example of the bonds that the tutors and students experience at Study Hut – I am sure there have been and will be plenty more.
With summer underway and the Independence Day holiday weekend behind us, our enrichment programs at Study Hut are in full force, and learning is back on the agenda.
Tonight we begin our ACT small-group course, which runs Monday and Wednesday evenings for the remainder of summer. Our SAT small-group course also begins tomorrow evening, and runs through the rest of summer on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Students are excited to learn concepts that they either missed in high school or have not yet learned, and they are even more eager to go over their practice tests and learn time management and question prioritization strategies for both the ACT and SAT. Students in previous classes at Study Hut Tutoring have learned all about the tremendous benefits of having an ACT tutor or an SAT tutor in their corner.
Whether a student needs help with SAT math, critical reading, writing, or some combination of these, having a top Study Hut tutor has shown to make a huge difference in students’ scores. Our small group ACT and SAT classes have helped to earn students an average of over 200 points of improvement from their original scores, and many students improve 300 or more points.
At the Hut, we strongly suggest making a game-plan early so as to ensure that your son or daughter has the maximum amount of time to make the gains that he or she desires. The test preparation process is, after all, about opening as many doors as possible, both for college and for opportunities beyond.
If your son or daughter has not yet taken a practice SAT or ACT, now is the time to see where you stand. We offer free full-length SAT and ACT diagnostic tests, and we also provide free consultations to parents and students after the test so that you can fully understand your results. Please email info@studyhut.com today to sign up at any of our beach-front locations.

1. Start Early! – This is the most important one. The internet provides plenty of ways to waste your study time, but you’ll be happy you stayed away from Netflix and Reddit when the final finally comes.
2. Study in Chunks – Your brain works best in 50 minute intervals. You may feel studious after your 6 hour study marathon, but a tired brain doesn’t absorb information like a fresh one. Take 5-10 minutes breaks every hour to make sure you’re making the most of your study time.
3. A Clean, Well-Lighted Place – Studying in bed may sound like a good idea, but once you’re in bed, so will a nap. Find a place that works for you. It should be somewhere where you can focus, spread out your notes, and get in a studying groove. And if you get sick of one place, switch it up!
4. Know Your Teacher – Ask questions, take notes, review old worksheets. Figure out what your teacher thinks is important because that’s what will show up on the final.
5. Study Alone – Start with what you don’t know. Review your old tests, quizzes, and homeworks, and take notes on what you missed. Then spend some time on your own with each of these topics. Write down any questions you have because the next step is…
6. Study in Groups – Once you’ve figured out your own strengths and weaknesses in each subject, form a study group. Here you can ask questions you had on your own and answer some of your study buddies’. Explaining concepts and hearing them explained in new ways will strengthen your understanding of the material.
7. Exercise – Exercise increases blood flow to the brain, and you may need all the brain blood you can get for finals week. It’s also a great way to take a break from book to soak up some sun.
8. Sleep – It may be tempting to cram all night, but
it may not help as much as you think. Give your brain a rest! When the night before the test comes around, be confident in the studying you’ve been doing all week and get some extra sleep.
