Study Hut Tutoring is excited to announce that several tutors from our team in Newport Beach were able to attend JSerra Catholic High School’s annual College Fair this evening. Students from JSerra and other surrounding Orange County high schools came together to learn about different colleges and career options.
While refreshments were abundant and the mood was undoubtedly jovial, most of the students in attendance at JSerra were quite serious. After all, the College Fair is a rare opportunity to meet college admissions officers in person, and the impression that a student makes can actually have quite an impact on his or her admissions chances. While some universities send alumni representatives, many schools’ admissions officers that will be the actual decision-makers when student applications are submitted were present, fielded questions and met potential applicants. The JSerra College Fair was, therefore, a courteous yet competitive outing, with each student attempting to put his or her best foot forward. We saw some very well dressed students in attendance, ready to make a great impression.
So what was Study Hut Tutoring doing at the College Fair? Was this just another event to grab a booth at the carnival and pass out candy? Absolutely not. While most students at a College Fair are likely not roaming the crowd looking for a math tutor or a writing tutor in Newport Beach (our closest office), many have questions about SAT training, ACT tutoring, and the entire college admissions process. That is where Study Hut comes in; we know the process and we are familiar with the ins-and-outs of navigating most university websites and application forms. We were able to help current students and new students to better understand what the college application process looks like, from essay writing and collecting Letters of Recommendation to scholarship searching and submitting test scores. Of course, if you have any questions or need any help, we are here for you!
The attendance was high for the JSerra College Fair last night!
Timeline: the revised SAT, or [rSAT], will be offered 7 times a year beginning March, 2016. The upcoming PSAT in October will be a shortened version of the [rSAT]–this PSAT is optional and scores come back 6-8 weeks after the test is administered at your high school. Study Hut will offer the new [rSAT] in the fall alongside the ACT so students are able to experience the style of the new exam.
How can Study Hut Tutoring help?
Study Hut Tutoring offers free practice tests for the new SAT. This means that once you fill out our contact form or give a call, we can sign you up for a free, full-length new SAT exam. Once you’ve completed the exam, you get to go home, hang tight, and wait for us to grade the exam. Don’t worry, we will call you once the exam is graded to set up a free 20-30 minute consultation to go over the entire exam. During the meeting we will look at all of your strengths and weaknesses, and recommend the best course of action for you based on your score goal, your desired university you would love to attend, your current schedule, and how long you wish to train for the test. We look forward to getting you geared up and ready for test day.
Content changes (the [rSAT] is now a lot like the ACT):
1. The elimination of difficult vocabulary
2. Added Emphasis on command of evidence
3. Essay Analyzing a Source
4. Math Focused on Three Key Areas
5. Problems Grounded in Real World Contexts
6. Analysis in Science and Social Studies
7. Emphasis on Founding Documents and Great Global Conversation
Stick to the ACT. Study Hut offers practice tests (previously proctored real ACT exams), free post-test consultations, small group-courses, and tailored one-on-one training. We know your kiddo, we’re masters of the ACT, and we’re here to help because we’ve been there and done that.
As summer in El Segundo arrives and the school year comes to an end, Study Hut is relishing the achievements of our students and looking forward to summertime and the next school year. The 2014-2015 academic year has been exciting and enjoyable for Study Hut, El Segundo. We take great pride in seeing the growth and progress of our students as they strive to reach their academic goals, and we put forth our best effort to assist them every step of the way.
This school year we served local El Segundo School District students from El Segundo High School, El Segundo Middle School, Center Street School, and Richmond Street School. We also had the privilege of working with students from the surrounding districts of LAUSD, MBUSD, and RBUSD, coming from Mira Costa High, Redondo Union High, Reseda High, Manhattan Beach Middle School, and Parras Middle School. Additionally, we had some wonderful students from the local private schools Vistamar, St. John Bosco, Bishop Montgomery, Loyola, and Chadwick.
Working with such a wide variety of students and school districts has been a wonderful way for us to grow as a service: broadening our knowledge of varying curriculums and school expectations. Whether we were working with a 3rd grader on Common Core math enrichment and reading comprehension, or helping a high school Junior succeed in challenging Spanish and calculus classes, we have been able to exceed expectations and propel students to new heights in their personal academic success. We also enjoyed working with El Segundo High this school year by administering, proctoring, and reviewing full-length practice SATs and ACTs for our local students, creating a valuable resource to them as they strive to achieve their best result on these crucial tests. Now that summer in El Segundo has arrived, we are enjoying a brief respite from the rigours of the academic year, and refocusing our energy to best assist our summer students.
We will continue to work with students through the summer in El Segundo, concentrating on varying areas determined by student need. The waning obligations of summertime offers a great opportunity for students to get a head start on upcoming classes with one-on-one tutoring. Our summer students will be introduced to forthcoming concepts, solidify fundamentals while enriching current understanding, and/or undertake a test preparation program to improve on the SAT and/or ACT. For our incoming Seniors, summer is a great time to make the final push for a solid SAT/ACT score in the fall, and to begin working with a tutor to develop a plan of attack for college applications and their entailing essays and personal statements. Regardless of the specific focus, summer tutoring is an excellent way for students to stay engaged and enter the upcoming school year with a smooth transition to more advanced coursework.
We look forward to continuing to serve El Segundo and the surrounding communities through the summer and next school year. Check out the Hut!

Hayley started coming to Study Hut her freshman year of high school. She came almost every day to work on all of her challenging classes with her tutors. From studying for insane math tests to acing AP English, Study Hut has always had Hayley’s back when it came to helping her get her achieve her best.
When it came time to start looking at colleges and filling out her college applications, Hayley knew exactly who she wanted to have help her along the way. Hayley worked on everything related to college with her tutor Laura. Laura had watched her grow through the years both academically and personally. She helped Hayley narrow down her list of schools to apply to so they were left with only the schools that met all of Hayley’s requirements. They sorted through safety schools, reaches, and Hayley’s top choice: San Diego State University.
Hayley and Laura spent a lot of time making sure that Hayley’s personal statement was perfect. Because they had worked together for so long, Hayley felt comfortable opening up to Laura about her ADD. Together they crafted a series of car analogies that related her experiences with ADD to her school work and other areas of her life. They brain stormed and remembered Hayley’s greatest academic accomplishments and personal triumphs for the other sections of her applications, and made sure not a single question was left unanswered. They patiently waited to hear back from schools. As acceptances rolled in Hayley kept checking for SDSU. They were delighted when they found out she was accepted!
By the time you get to high school you have already heard all about the SAT and the ACT. But what about the SAT II Subject Tests? Many colleges require them, but people do not seem to talk about them as much as the other two tests. So, what exactly are the SAT IIs?
The SAT IIs are hour-long tests that focus on specific topics. Most tests are multiple-choice. For the language tests, there is a listening portion. The cool thing about the SAT II is that you can choose which subjects you take. That means that you can pick the subjects you know best and feel most comfortable in. Even if the college you are applying to does not require SAT IIs, they can still be helpful. Getting a great score on an SAT II can set you apart from other applicants applying to the same program. Doing well on certain SAT IIs can also count for placement in higher-level classes than you would be placed in without an SAT II.
You can take up to three SAT IIs in one day, but you may take just one as well. The subjects on the SAT II are covered in a deeper context than on the regular SAT. You will need to fully grasp concepts instead of just having broad overarching knowledge of the topic. Unlike the regular SAT, you should not wait until your junior or senior years to take the SAT II. You should take it after the class you have taken that corresponds with the topic you are picking for the SAT II. That way the majority of the information will be fresh in your head and you have a greater chance for success!
Keeping up with homeschool can be difficult. There is no regularly scheduled class that you have to attend every day, your teacher is just a strange, faceless online entity, and the classes are rarely as interactive as ones in a traditional school environment. All these factors, combined with the fact that most students find it very difficult to teach themself new material, make it very easy to fall behind. At first, it can seem like a harmless thing to do. “Oh, I’ll just make up that day tomorrow.” But soon one day behind becomes two, then three, and suddenly you are fifteen class days behind and the end of the semester is just two weeks away. It is important to remain diligent in keeping up with your homeschool classes. There are a few things that you can do to make sure that this happens.
Try to have the work completed by the day that is assigned, or the date it is scheduled to be done. If you know that you will not have any time to log in to your online class on a certain day or week, get it done beforehand and be ahead instead of waiting until after and struggling to play catch up. Schedule a regularly recurring appointment with a tutor twice a week if you cannot motivate yourself to keep up in classes, or if the material is challenging to teach to yourself. Our one-on-one tutors will make sure to keep you on track, and make all the material easy to understand.
This week West Torrance High School will be having two finals week cram sessions at the library. Friday will be in the evening from 3PM to 6PM. Saturday will be in the morning from 9AM to 12PM. Study Hut tutors from the Redondo Beach and Manhattan Beach locations come to the study sessions to help students in large groups as well as individually.
The library is split up into different sections where students can get help in the specific subject that they are studying for. This helps them focus because they do not become distracted by their friends who are trying to learn different subjects at the same time. Once a study feels like they can move on to a different subject, they can move on to the different area of the library and fully concentrate on the new material. Sessions like these are also helpful because then students can work with other students in their class. Many times, students are unable to find a convenient time and location to work together with their peers. These West High study sessions resolve that issue. Students are also able to work through problems together and go over any difficult concepts on the study guide together until a tutor becomes available. This makes their study time more efficient and effective. Many students often have the same question, so the tutor can answer all of them at once. Alternatively, the students can help each other and figure out the problem together. Whether you plan on attending one or both sessions, these study sessions will be highly beneficial to any student.
