Study Hut Tutoring is proud to endorse and support the Newport-Mesa Unified School District’s Second Annual Festival of Learning. It is right around the corner: Thursday, February 22, 2016 at 5:00 p.m. at Estancia High School. The Festival will provide Newport-Mesa families and community members with an opportunity to learn more about many of the incredible specialty programs provided by the district. Among other programs to be highlighted, the Signature Academies and bi-literacy programs are sure to stand out as those that draw featured interest. The Signature Academies include programs centered on key industry leading careers and areas of study, including Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM). Study Hut Tutoring encourages and supports these programs and their goals, specifically by working with our current students on projects, assignments, and ideas related to these classes and areas of study.
Various Signature Academy programs will take receive spotlight focus during presentations from principals, teachers, and students from Newport Harbor High School, Ensign Middle School, Corona del Mar High School, and Estancia High School, among others. Programs to be featured include engineering, medical, performing arts, multimedia, construction technology, the Mandarin and Spanish immersion programs, and more, according to the flier. There will also be hands-on art and technology demonstrations, musical performances, and food for purchase from the Newport Harbor High School Culinary Team. Study Hut and our team of tutors are particularly excited for this event since it draws in many of the district’s top students. It is always refreshing to work with and discuss ideas with the area’s best and brightest. Our math tutors find it extremely refreshing to work with go-getters who are looking to push the limits of their understanding, rather than just trying to get by. At Study Hut Tutoring, we push our pupils to pursue concepts and content areas that interest them most, as we all know the motivating power than true interest and passion can provide. Whether it is through the lens of math tutoring, English tutoring, Spanish tutoring, or other subject tutoring in Newport Beach and the surrounding areas, our tutors love students who are as fired up as we are about these topics.
Please check out the following district link for more information. We look forward to seeing you there!
Finals, for some of you, are in just over a week! Hopefully your reaction to that isn’t to start crying or throwing your books across the room. Hopefully you’ve been diligent all year, you’ve turned in all of your homework, you’ve stayed organized, and you’ve started your finals preparation weeks in advance.
If somehow, this isn’t you-you still don’t need to go all Britney Spears 2007 on us.
We are here to help! Here are some steps to success!
Prioritize
At this point, it’s too late to thoroughly prepare for all of your classes. Take stock of what needs the most triage. Which class is teetering right between grades? Where is there the most chance for affecting change?
Missing Work/Low Test Scores
Do you have homeworks missing? These are zeros that are so easily remedy-it’s the first place to check. If your teacher accepts late work, make a list of homework zeros and bust them out.
Does your teacher have a retake option? If so, find your lowest test score, and schedule a make up time to take that test. The time you put in for this make up test will also be productive towards a cumulative final.
Set aside SPECIFIED time to study
Sitting around, complaining about how much you need to study doesn’t count. Write into your schedule when and where you will be studying. If you tend to blow this off, get someone (Mom, sister, brother, friend) on board to help hold you accountable. It’s crunch time now-there’s no more excuses.
Focus on the biggest holes
So you’ve picked the 2-3 classes that you’re going to spend the most time on. This narrows the field, but still leave a lot of material to cover in one week. When you sit down to study, you should spend less time on the chapters you did well on in the past, and more time on chapters with which you struggled. It is NOT a good idea to throw the struggle-chapters aside as a hopeless after thought.
COME TO STUDY HUT
Our experienced tutors will help you zero in on what’s most important, and will help you master the material quickly. We’ve got tons of resources, and because our sessions are one-on-one we can tailor it to whatever you need: an hour on adding fractions-that’s fine! 45 minutes devoted to factoring quadratics-let’s do it.

Picture this: you’re sitting in your room trying to start your biology homework. #1- Where does cellular respiration occur in the cell? You’re drawing a complete blank. The cytoplasm? The chloroplast? Mitochondria? What about the endoplasmic reticulum – smooth or rough? Wish you had some help? You can find great biology tutoring in Torrance here, at Study Hut Tutoring.
The cell cycles are the most challenging part of the year for many biology students. Here are all of the cycles listed in chronological order and grouped by function and location:
Daytime – chloroplast (plant cell only)
Photosynthesis (thylakoid)
Calvin cycle (stroma)
Nighttime (aerobic – with oxygen) – mitochondria
Glycolysis (cytoplasm)
Krebs/Citric Acid cycle (matrix of mitochondria)
Electron Transport Chain (inner membrane of mitochondria)
Nighttime (anaerobic – without oxygen) – cytoplasm
Glycolysis (cytoplasm)
Fermentation (cytoplasm)
BEFORE YOU LOOK AT THE PICTURE BELOW, try this on your own: draw a big rectangle. Inside the rectangle, draw a chloroplast (circle with smaller circles inside of it), then draw a mitochondria (jelly bean-shaped oval with a squiggle inside of it). Now try to place all of the cycles above on the drawing, connected by arrows. If you can, add some important inputs/outputs of each cycle (H2O, CO2, O2, ATP, sunlight, glucose, etc). Does it look something like this?
1) During the day, the plant
– uses the chloroplast to make ATP (via photosynthesis) and
– glucose (Calvin cycle) to store up energy.
2) At night, the plant will take the glucose it made during the day (via Calvin cycle) and
– break it down (glycolysis) to
– make energy (Krebs/ETC).
3) If the plant does not have access to oxygen, it will do
– glycolysis and
– fermentation (instead of Krebs and ETC).
Need someone to help you draw it? Look no further. Biology tutoring in Torrance is easy to find, affordable, and easy to schedule. Within minutes of calling, you’ll be able to schedule one of our many experienced tutors for a one-on-one tutoring session to help you with that tough bio homework or study for an upcoming test.
It was only a year ago that our phones were ringing off the hook here at the Newport Beach Study Hut with concerned parents, some of whom were asking about current Study Hut students, and others that were new or prospective clients, and they all had questions about the same thing: Common Core tutoring in Newport Beach. Parents wanted to know what the Common Core math curriculum was going to change, what it would look like in English classrooms, and how we were assisting our students with Common Core tutoring now that we had begun the school year and were working with the content first-hand.
Many websites do contain plenty of helpful information that can demystify the curriculum and break down the process, such as this official California Department of Education site: http://www.cde.ca.gov/ci/ma/im/ and while information like this can be helpful, sometimes it is just too confusing for the average mom or dad trying to rush one kid to piano lessons and another to soccer practice.
After having gone through all grade levels of the Common Core curriculum last year, we here at Study Hut can officially say that we have got you covered. We know where students are most likely to get stuck, and we know how to help them get back up and truly understand the critical foundational material involved in each of the building lessons. Whether you love Common Core’s arrival in Newport Beach or just plain can’t stand it, we can all agree that the lessons and levels build upon each other. So when your student gets caught on a few concepts, please do not just accept it as a bad grade and move on. These deficiencies or areas of missing conceptual understanding will come back to bite students later in the year, and in most cases with math and English, the same concepts will come back up year after year. That is just all the more reason to make sure to get a solid base for your son or daughter as early as possible, and be sure to seek help with Common Core tutoring if you feel like your kiddo needs a little bit of extra support in order to get caught up or stay ahead in his or her classes at Newport Harbor High School or Corona del Mar High School.
Come down to the Study Hut in Redondo Beach, where we arm students like you from all over the South Bay with strategies to excel on every section of the test. We understand that taking the ACT coincides with a very crucial time in students’ lives: when you decide where you want to go to college. On top of making sure that your grades and applications are in order, you also have to worry about preparing for a four-hour long test designed to evaluate almost everything you’ve learned in high school. It’s enough to make anyone stressed out. But that’s okay. Even the best students aren’t always the best test-takers, so don’t worry; you’re not alone if you think you need help.
ACT at the Redondo Beach Hut
At the Hut we employ graduates from renowned universities, including UC Berkeley, UC Santa Barbara, UC Irvine, and Cal Poly SLO to equip you with the leading ACT test-taking skills. So, when the time comes to take the test, you will not only be able to complete it efficiently, you’ll be able to do so confidently.
Because we work with students from a diverse pool of high schools — Palos Verdes, Peninsula, South Torrance, Redondo Union, Loyola and others — we have plenty of experience adapting these test-taking strategies to best fit your specific needs. No matter what your subject background or your skill level, we are ready to help you.
So how does this work? First, we set you up with a free and brief consultation where we determine the ACT prep course that’s right for you. Our packages range from 12 to 16 to 20 sessions total, with each session lasting two hours. After we set up the course that best suits your schedule and abilities, you start meeting with your tutor! Together we’ll help you dissect complex reading passages, simplify the steps you take to answer questions correctly, and prepare you to make more educated guesses.
Over the years, the Hut has witnessed so many of its students exceed their expectations on the ACT, and we would love to catalyze your success too.
Ready to give this a shot? Either fill out the contact form on this page or give us a ring at (310)540-5888. We’re looking forward to gearing you up!
Corona Del Mar ACT tutoring has never been better than at Study Hut Tutoring. How can we be so sure? What actually makes us “the best”? In addition to our referral generating track record that speaks for itself, we have a competitive advantage in working with students, and knowing their weaknesses. We also leave our competition in the dust with respect to our tools, our tutors, and our years of experience tutoring students in Southern California. Like our website says, we are local (our owners are always on-site), we are passionate, and we are cutting edge. This means you get a greater return on your investment for each dollar spent and each minute you spend studying.
The process begins with a free, full-length practice test. This practice ACT is a previously proctored full-length actual exam that has been administered. We offer the test on a bi-monthly basis at our location across from the Balboa Bay Club, next to J. Galt Clothing and the Taco Bell. Our address is 1600 West Coast Hwy.
Once you’ve signed up for our free practice test, you’ll arrive bright-eyed and bushy-tailed to our office to take the 4-hour exam. When you’re done, we will schedule a free, pro-bono 20 minute post-test consultation to go over the results. This means that you will have all the information in front of you in order to make the best decision without spending a dime.
During this consultation we will go over every detail and answer all of your questions:
-How many points can I improve?
-How much training do I need to get the score I want?
-What’s the best course of action given my stated goals?
-What’s the cost?
The answers to all of these questions is simple: IT DEPENDS. Every student scores slightly differently, and every student has a different set of goals. Some students want a weekly session of Corona Del Mar ACT tutoring, while others want a bi-weekly session.
For every two hour session, we provide an hour of customized homework.
For more information, please fill out the contact form and we can get you exactly what you’ve been looking for.
Newport Beach ACT tutoring is more popular than ever!
One thing that has surprised us tremendously here at Study Hut Tutoring over the past few months is the radical increase in demand for our ACT tutors. Whereas interest in SAT tutoring has typically been double or even triple that of our ACT tutoring services, the ambiguity that the changes to the new SAT have carried with them has appeared to have steered many test-takers toward its fast-growing competitor: the ACT.
While students at Newport Harbor High School, Corona del Mar High School, Mater Dei, and Sage Hill, among others, are long-familiar with test preparation and training, the process of deciding between the two tests is changing and evolving quicker than school counselors and college search services are able to relay the important and relevant information. The result is that many of our clients, both longstanding and new, seem to often be quite confused by the differences between the tests, as well as the process of determining which test is right for their student.
At Study Hut Tutoring, we strongly recommend that each student begin the process by taking a free, full-length practice test. We offer real tests that were proctored in years prior so that your student can get a sense of exactly what kind of score to expect if he or she were to take the real ACT today. With those results, we can then look at the student’s strengths and weaknesses, undergo some goal-setting, and make a plan of action for how to “fill in the holes” and improve strategy and content understanding.
If you have any questions whatsoever regarding which test would be a better for your son or daughter to focus on, please ask our ACT experts at Study Hut Tutoring. Whether you are looking specifically for an ACT tutor, or rather are just seeking information and trying to get a good understanding of the process, we are here to help. Email ACT@studyhut.com with any questions you may have.
After a fantastic 2014-2015 school year in Manhattan Beach, Mira Costa students are about to enjoy some fun in the sun. While many have finished their SAT and ACT exams, others are starting summer school. So for those of you who have to spend some morning time in the classroom, Study Hut Tutoring is here for you after class, at our new summer location: 1208 Artesia Blvd. in Hermosa Beach, across the street from Mira Costa High School.
Our geometry tutors are standing by– we are available for hourly sessions Monday through Friday from 9am to 7pm. Whether you are getting ahead and taking Modern World History or US history, we have the local experts and books you need in order to earn A’s over summer. It is important to get off on the right foot because the summer classes are especially condensed, often only 4-6 weeks long. If it’s algebra tutoring you need, our top people are locked and loaded, ready to go.
Mira Costa High School isn’t the only school letting loose. Students from Manhattan Beach Middle School are “free at last” from the rigors of Mr. Rucker’s Boulder, Mrs. Luke’s math homework and early morning tutoring sessions on Late Start Wednesdays. Now that school is out, a lot of students are coming to Study Hut Tutoring for summer tutoring in Manhattan Beach to brush up on their pre-algebra skills, five paragraph essay writing, and Spanish verbs. These basics are quintessential to earning top marks in the fall. While buoy swims are equally as important for the body, the mind requires specific tuning in order to test well in early September.
For those students who have just wrapped up their last days at Grandview Elementary, Pacific Elementary, Robinson Elementary, and Pennykamp Elementary, there is a real transition that lies ahead as they enter into Manhattan Beach Middle School. Now more than ever, incoming 6th graders will be put to the test. But not to worry, Study Hut Tutoring is in your corner, having just helped a plethora of students with wide ranging needs, we are ready to help you tackle these challenges: we have the books, we know the curriculum, and you’re going to have a ton of fun knockin’ it out with us. Come in for engaging summer tutoring in Manhattan Beach to keep your mind fresh!
Imagine if each year you allowed three consecutive months to pass without ever considering diet or exercise; the result would be low energy, an underperforming immune system, and many other undesirable consequences. Just like any other part of the human body, the brain requires regular attention and maintenance to perform to its potential. Students often struggle to get back into the swing of academics after a long summer break, as their brains have been stagnant for weeks on end. Here at Study Hut Tutoring, we make sure to keep our students sharp through the summer time, allowing an easier entrance into the new school year and helping them to start strong and maintain that impressive GPA throughout the course of the academic year.
Summer tutoring offers many benefits to students. For some, summer tutoring serves as a valuable time to assess the strengths and weaknesses of the previous school year, and to clear up and solidify conceptual understanding that they will need to progress to more advanced courses. For others, summer tutoring serves as an opportunity to learn new material before being exposed to it in the classroom, giving them more confidence and an easier route to an “A”. And still for others, we help with writing enrichment, summer reading requirements, and preparation for the Fall SAT and ACT.
Of course, we at Study Hut Tutoring also appreciate the value of leisure time. Our founders, Rob and Sean, along with our tutors have been making the most of this summer by spending plenty of time on and in the ocean, be it to surf, spearfish, or boat across the channel to Catalina Island. We will be seeing off our managerial staff on an annual leadership trip at the end of July, and look forward to building an even stronger team to help our students through the remainder of the summer and next school year.
If you would like more information regarding our summer tutoring services, or you would like to sign up your son or daughter for summer help to prepare for the upcoming school year, please feel welcome to contact us at info@studyhut.com. Enjoy your summer!
With summer underway and the Independence Day holiday weekend behind us, our enrichment programs at Study Hut are in full force, and learning is back on the agenda.
Tonight we begin our ACT small-group course, which runs Monday and Wednesday evenings for the remainder of summer. Our SAT small-group course also begins tomorrow evening, and runs through the rest of summer on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Students are excited to learn concepts that they either missed in high school or have not yet learned, and they are even more eager to go over their practice tests and learn time management and question prioritization strategies for both the ACT and SAT. Students in previous classes at Study Hut Tutoring have learned all about the tremendous benefits of having an ACT tutor or an SAT tutor in their corner.
Whether a student needs help with SAT math, critical reading, writing, or some combination of these, having a top Study Hut tutor has shown to make a huge difference in students’ scores. Our small group ACT and SAT classes have helped to earn students an average of over 200 points of improvement from their original scores, and many students improve 300 or more points.
At the Hut, we strongly suggest making a game-plan early so as to ensure that your son or daughter has the maximum amount of time to make the gains that he or she desires. The test preparation process is, after all, about opening as many doors as possible, both for college and for opportunities beyond.
If your son or daughter has not yet taken a practice SAT or ACT, now is the time to see where you stand. We offer free full-length SAT and ACT diagnostic tests, and we also provide free consultations to parents and students after the test so that you can fully understand your results. Please email info@studyhut.com today to sign up at any of our beach-front locations.
